I am hiring a Network Operations Engineer (NOC Engineer) to start immediately.





  • This is a Direct Hire position

  • Up to $90k/year depending on experience (candidates get $90k must have both BGP and DWDM experience)

  • This is a remote position, but will eventually require you to come to the office (with advanced notice) for mandatory meetings or training

  • The Swing shift starts around 11 AM at night and ends around 10 PM in the morning


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Monitor
a. Proactively monitoring the Company's networks to detect and resolve problems and ensure
uninterrupted operations of the networks.
b. Review turnover reports, scheduled maintenances, and the general state of the network.
c. Participate in daily triage schedule to investigate monitoring alarms, respond to new
requests, and answer incoming calls.
2. Troubleshoot
a. Problem troubleshooting and resolution, including interaction with carriers, vendors, and
company's senior-level engineering group
b. Develop a clear understanding of network outages and determine the best course to
resolution.
c. Draft clear and concise announcements for network outages.
d. Evaluate all risk exposures and collaborate with teammates on best paths to resolution.
3. Customer Service
a. Problem troubleshooting and resolution with Company's associates
b. Respond to service requests via phone and ticketing system
4. Maintenances
a. Planning, evaluating, and executing network maintenance activities
b. Adhere to change control policies and exercise sound judgment when conducting
maintenance.
c. Assist Network Administrator with coordinating the shipment of equipment to network
sites
d. Assist Network Administrator with announcements for maintenance activities
5. Documentation
a. Participation in updating and revising policies, procedures, technical reports,
documentation, and internal training material
b. Maintain accurate inventory for network equipment
6. Security
a. Take individual responsibility, consideration, and awareness, as appropriate to the
position, for security of Company's computer systems.
b. Work with the Security Team, as indicated by management, to identify, discuss,
and implement network security designs, and implementations of network security
policies, procedures, and technologies.


KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
1. Communicate effectively with team members through ticket entries, daily check-in calls, and
Slack channels
2. Communicate effectively via phone and email with network contacts and vendors.
3. Prioritize multiple demanding events along with daily tasks.
4. Exercise sound judgment when handling issues and responding to associates.
5. Willingness to work any shift (including weekends), as assigned, and to rotate shifts and
schedules as assigned.
6. Work independently to develop solutions adhering to policies and procedures.
7. Able to perform risk assessment and mitigation to avoid negative impacts.
8. Continuous open collaboration with teammates and other members in the organization.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
1. 2 years in a network operations environment in support of customer networks OR
2. 2 years in a technical support role interacting with contacts via phone and ticketing system AND
3. Hands-on experience with live production Cisco and Juniper network devices
4. Administer and configure Cisco and Juniper routers/switches, implement firmware changes, OS
releases and other software upgrades.
5. Troubleshoot router/network performance problems on a live production network
6. Troubleshoot circuit problems for commercially lit services and self-lit dark fiber services
7. Prepare announcements for maintenance activities or network outages
8. Understanding of network security, secure configuration of network devices, and the use of
network devices to secure networks of computing systems, including configuring and maintaining
ACLs, knowledge of firewalls, and intrusion detection systems.
9. Experience with installing, upgrading, and securing network equipment and services


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
1. Cisco CCNP certification
2. Direct experience in network configuration, management, and operations
3. Experience with optical transmission systems such as DWDM
4. Experience working with advanced routing protocols such as BGP
5. Working knowledge of MPLS-SR and L2VPNs
6. Experience in a university and/or research environment
