Description

Our creative, engaged Department of Communications & Marketing tells the stories of the City of Norfolk. The department works collaboratively with City staff members, as well as residents, organizations and visitors, to promote the events, projects and people who make Norfolk an exciting, welcoming, thriving city.

Assists, educates, and informs Norfolk residents and other customers about services and programs available throughout the City. Performs liaison duties and promotes partnerships between the City and various organizations and individuals. Helps promote programs and events, and handles related special projects.

Essential Functions
  • Creates original content (video, photography, social media, web posts, etc.) to promote a wide range of City services. Writes copy and creates visuals that are strategically placed across various City-owned platforms.
  • Serves in the Joint Information Center (JIC) when activated in a natural or man-made crisis.
  • Acts as a liaison to City departments, supports special events, and works collaboratively with Communications colleagues.
  • Represents department and department interests at meetings.
  • Implements event coverage using decision-making authority.
  • Promotes programs and agendas by responding to inquiries from media, writing occasional media releases, creating presentations and public service announcements, updating the website and submitting daily information on City programs.
  • Performs administrative duties such as researching and writing reports, replying to inquiries regarding the City's website, as well as reviewing and preparing statistical information for presentations.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision.
Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Required:
  • 2 years of experience in marketing and communications field.
Additional Information & Requirements

Work Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
  • Nights and weekends as needed
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.
  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
  • Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
