Scheduled Weekly Hours: 0 Job Description: Top of Form Job Description Position Title: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Last Reviewed: 12/2020 Salary Class: Non-Exempt Department: Nursing Units Position Code: 4719 Reports To: Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Manager, Nursing Director BASIC FUNCTION The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for performing basic care of patients under the general supervision of an RN in the acute hospital setting. The CNA is also responsible for transporting and transferring patients within the medical complex in a safe and efficient manner. The CNA will also assist with data collection to facilitate the delivery of delegated nursing care. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Assists with basic care for patients in the areas of nutrition, elimination, comfort, mobility and safety. Transports and transfers patients within the medical complex using appropriate equipment and utilizing safety precautions as indicated by the patient's health status. Assists nursing staff in lifting and ambulating patients using appropriate practice guidelines. Maintains environment and equipment Works collaboratively with the healthcare team members to effectively communicate and document accurate information Demonstrates dependability, organizational skills and effective use of time by setting priorities to complete delegated work within established time frames in accordance with unit guidelines. Demonstrates role accountability be adhering to Gundersen Health System Mission statement, policies and confidentiality standards. Assists in the orientation of new personnel. Participates in quality improvement activities in order to continuously im0prove patient care and unit operations. Participates in unit staff meetings. Exceptions: may be enrolled in such a program, if able to graduate successfully within 3 months of hire; or is a student in a State recognized nursing program (RN or LPN) and has documentation of successful completion of basic nursing courses or a competency evaluation program. Exposed to infectious diseases. Physical/Sensory/Cognitive Requirements: PHYSICAL: Strength: Ability to transfer, lift, move and turn a patient to or from a bed/wheelchair, Hoyer lift, EZ stand, toilet, tub and shower and occasionally the floor. Following assessment for need of assistance requires varying degrees of pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting due to the difference in patient weights which could be over 100 pounds. Manual Dexterity: Must be able to continuously perform manipulative tasks of writing, handling papers, computer keyboard/laptop/mouse/scanner, using the equipment listed above as well as safety pins, buttons, snaps, buckles, and tie strings. Occasionally performs difficult manipulative tasks, such as IV starts. Coordination: Ability to safely assist a patient with all ADL's, transfer and ambulation and use of equipment requiring good hand/eye coordination. Requires steadiness and the ability to move about in tight space, between objects, equipment and furniture. Mobility: Must be able to continuously stand and walk; frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist, stretch or sit for varying periods of time during a scheduled shift of up to 12 hours. Speech: Must be able to continuously articulate clearly and precisely, with English as the basic element of speech. Emotional Stability: Must be able to continuously d3eal effectively with stress created by sick patients, multiple tasks, Moises, interruptions and work cooperatively as part of the healthcare team while maintaining a pleasant demeanor. SENSORY: Vision: Must be able to continually see objects up close so as to notice a change in the patient condition (breathing, color, skin breakdown, etc.). Ability to focus and read thermometers and other gauges and distinguish colors for warning lights. Hearing: Must be able to continuously hear normal sounds and voice patters with some background noise. Must have adequate hearing to receive verbal communication by phone and in person. Must also be able to hear audible emergency signals, alarms, and call light indicators. Smell: Must be able to detect the smell of smoke, spoiled food, soiled linen, residue of infections and appropriateness of patient body odors. COGNITIVE Concentration: Ability to concentrate on moderate details with frequent interruptions. Attention Span: Attend to a function from 10-25 minutes Conceptualize: Must be able to understand and relate specific ideas and concepts. Memory: Must be able to remember multiple tasks and assignments over a period of up to 12 hours of a scheduled shift. Also, day to day assignments for continuity of care and application of procedure. Responsibilities in an Emergency: The RN is expected to respond to emergency situations involving the safety of patients, other employees and the facility. This includes the ability to assist with a possible evacuation of patients.
