Job Summary: As a microbiology intern, you will assist our team in the development, testing, and quality control of our products. You will work closely with our R&D and production teams to ensure that our products meet the highest safety and quality standards. You will also have the opportunity to learn about various microbiological techniques, including culturing, identification, and analysis.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Follow biosafety guidelines and Standard Microbiological Practices for work in a BSL-2 laboratory
  • Routine cleaning and sterilization of laboratory equipment via dishwashing, chemical disinfection, and autoclaving
  • Preparation of growth media, buffers, and reagents
  • Preparation of inoculations and solutions needed for experiments
  • Counting bacterial colonies and performing CFU/mL calculations
  • Measuring the optical density of bacterial cultures using a spectrophotometer
  • Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices
  • Independently track reagent and media inventories
  • Provide microbiology laboratory testing support as needed
  • May require occasional travel for microbiology support
  • Work onsite in Orlando, FL (Lake Nona)
  • Work at least 20 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week when not in school

Preferred Skills/Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Bacteriology, or a related field of study. Must have completed (at minimum) the sophomore year of college
  • At least one year of experience with hands-on laboratory benchwork (lab courses excluded) in a biological sciences discipline is required
  • Excellent aseptic technique
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory calculations for preparing solutions and buffers
  • Ability to proficiently use micropipettes and positive displacement pipettes
  • Proficiency with basic microbiology culturing techniques
  • Ability to count bacterial colonies and perform CFU/mL calculations
  • Ability to perform serial dilutions of bacterial cultures
  • Ability to use and maintain personal protective safety equipment
  • Must be willing to work with chemical and biological hazards
  • General computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office (Word / Excel)
  • Able to work independently, set priorities, and complete important deliverables
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to spend long periods on feet
  • Ability to multi-task and have high attention to detail, organizational skills, record keeping, communication skills, and ability to follow policies and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Motivated team player with experience with problem-solving
