Job Description Mental Health Peer Educators (MHPE) provide KU-Lawrence students with support, referrals to CAPS and/or other campus resources, drop in peer listening, outreach and programming, and will assist with developing marketing materials for CAPS (e.g., social media, posters). MHPE are expected to work an average of 10 hours per week each semester with required training/orientation time prior to the start of Fall semester. Regular weekly meetings are required as are occasional evening and weekend times. MHPE are trained in listening skills, program presentation, BAACHUS peer educator training, risk assessment and suicide prevention, and other relevant topics from CAPS licensed staff/invited professionals throughout the academic year. The position requires 10 hours per week including weekly supervision and monthly trainings and will offer an hourly salary of $10. Anticipated start date is August 14, 2024 and will require a commitment for the entire academic year. Required Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing and enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at KU. Possess leadership and teamwork skills (i.e. self-motivated, well-organized, able to share responsibility, assertive, receptive to feedback, creative thinking) as well as basic presentation and communication skills as evident of the application material. Ability to work with a diverse as evident of the application material. Schedules must be flexible to provide outreach services on days/times requested by campus organizations or departments and drop-in peer listening hours, as permitted by class schedule. Applicants must be able to attend required weekly MHPE team meeting. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience and interest in working in college mental health with a diverse student population. Openness to learning about self and others of diverse backgrounds. Effective and empathetic listening skills. Interest in increasing awareness about mental health issues and treatment.
