The Medical Laboratory Technician performs various tests in the fields of clinical chemistry, hematology, blood banking, serology, and urinalysis to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of various clinical conditions. The Medical Laboratory Technician sets up cultures, performs Gram's stains and otherwise assists in microbiology procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician collects blood specimens by venipuncture, heel or fingerstick, and radial artery puncture, records and reports test results appropriate for age, sex, and diagnosis, assists in record keeping, performs quality control, and performs preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment as assigned and fellows all safety policies and procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician is familiar with the LIS in all aspects of patient test ordering and resulting. He or she can access the HIS for patient information and the anatomic pathology information system for pathological results or reports when necessary. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS and EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree with necessary science/math credits as required and verified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC). New graduate's degree must be validated within 2 months post-graduation ASCP-BOC certified within 6 months with first exam completed within 3 months of hire, with certification verified within six weeks of exam. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Approximately eight weeks of orientation is required in any case. The Medical Laboratory Technician is capable of collecting blood samples by venipuncture, arterial puncture, heelstick and fingerstick and is aware of the danger involved with these procedures and how to avoid any dangers. He or she understands the use and limitations of laboratory equipment, apparatus and tests and is familiar with standard routine laboratory methods as with a variety of special procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician is familiar with techniques, culture methods and sterilization techniques. The Medical Laboratory Technician has a basic knowledge of various fields of specialty laboratory work and understands the significance of tests used and the relationship of the results to the clinical state of the patient. This knowledge assists the Medical Laboratory Technician in judging validity of test results, particularly in cases of abnormal findings. In addition, the Medical Laboratory Technician is familiar with the concepts and performance of quality control and preventive maintenance. Also an understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients of all ages in relation to the growth and development processes to include neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
