Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; occasional evenings and weekends.

The Medical Assistant I provides assistance to nurses and nurse practitioners with the basic functions of a medical office. Triages patients. Performs vital signs check and venipuncture.

Additional Department Summary: This is a 9-month position (August-May), and will be assigned to the Student Health Center.

Facilitates quality patient care at assigned University Medical Center Clinics. Provides medical or surgical assistance to physicians and nurses and prepares patients for consultations. Provides general clinical assistance as needed, include staffing receptionist desk, screening calls, making referrals, verifying insurances, scheduling appointments and follow-up visits. Assists in providing nursing care as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and six (6) months of healthcare work experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform patient care as directed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified medical professional. Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills. Excellent communication, public relations, customer service, and telephone etiquette skills. Willingness to learn and consistently deliver patient-centered, high-quality customer service. Ability to maintain strict confidentially of protected health information and follow HIPAA regulations at all times. Punctual and reliable.

Preferred Qualifications: Certified to perform Medical Assistant duties in the State of Alabama. Experience with computers and Electronic Health records systems.
