Mechanic I

$4,673.02 - $6,262.32 Monthly

OR

Mechanic II

$5,189.45 - $6,954.35 Monthly

The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City's physical infrastructure and maintenance for the City's beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, and rights of way, while protecting the public's health and safety. The department also provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City's buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems in addition to management of a wide range of services and programs.
The Position

The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills in order to work efficiently and effectively with all City Departments, employees, and service providers. This person should be self-motivated, take initiative, and work well as part of a team-oriented department. The ideal candidate will be able to perform skilled maintenance and repairs on a variety of light-duty, heavy-duty, and emergency services vehicles.

Mechanic I:

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

  1. Perform routine fluid checks on vehicles and equipment including oil, transmission, brake, and related fluid levels; replace as required.
  2. Assist in diagnosing, repairing, and adjusting a variety of systems on light and heavy equipment and vehicles including computer control systems, fuel injection systems, antilock brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, fuel management systems, transmissions, steering and suspension components, clutches and engine sensors.
  3. Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs; perform routine preventive maintenance; test and repair starters and recharge batteries.
  4. Assist in the overhaul and repair of engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors, and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.
  5. Test and repair starters and alternators; recharge batteries.
  6. Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  7. Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts; recondition and adjust carburetors, fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
  8. Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
  9. Inspect, test, and replace tires as required.
  10. Conduct parts inventory; maintain records of vehicles and supplies.
  11. Operate and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  12. Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
  13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Mechanic II:

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
  1. Perform skilled mechanic duties involving troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, heavy and light construction, and other power-driven equipment.
  2. Inspect, diagnose, repair, and adjust a variety of systems on light and heavy equipment and vehicles, including fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, computer control systems, fuel injection systems, antilock brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, fuel management systems, transmissions, steering and suspension components, clutches engine sensors, and DOT Inspections.
  3. Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs; perform routine preventive maintenance.
  4. Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.
  5. Convert automobiles from standard production units to law enforcement vehicles; install decals and numbers on units; fabricate and install specialized equipment on units such as amplifiers, light bars, shotgun racks, cages and overhead pipe rack.
  6. Diagnose, maintain and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters and batteries.
  7. Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives.
  8. Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  9. Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts, recondition and adjust carburetors, fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
  10. Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
  11. Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
  12. Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  13. Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
  14. Maintains work, time, material, and equipment logs and records; enters and/or retrieves data from computerized asset management/workflow system.
  15. Operates and maintains hand, power, diagnostic, shop tools, and equipment.
  16. Compiles and maintains maintenance, operation, and repair manuals, schematics, and other information relative to the City's vehicle, equipment, and facilities fleet.
  17. Provides training regarding the methods and techniques of vehicle and equipment pre-operation and safety checks, lubrication checks, start-up, operation, and shutdown procedures.
  18. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Requirements

Mechanic I:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: At least one (1) year of automotive maintenance and repair experience is desirable.

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance and repair or a related field.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement and a safe driving record within six (6) months of appointment is required. Employees hired after September 30, 2022, shall be required to possess a Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment.

OR

Mechanic II:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment maintenance and repair experience

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance and repair or a related field.

Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement and a safe driving record is required within six (6) months of appointment. Employees hired after September 30, 2022, shall be required to possess a Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Two ASE Certifications related to vehicles/equipment active within the City fleet including Medium/Heavy Truck Technician are required within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
  • California Fire Mechanic Level I certificate is required within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Preferred Certifications:
  • Possession of a California Fire Mechanic Level II certificate or above is highly desirable.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.
