Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) Materials Science ( MSD ) Division has an opening for a talented Research Scientist to join our esteemed team at the Center for X-Ray Optics (CXRO). As a Research Scientist at CXRO, you'll play a pivotal role in spearheading groundbreaking endeavors at the intersection of X-Ray/EUV and materials science. Reporting directly to the Director of CXRO, you'll be at the forefront of both technical innovation and scientific exploration.

This role offers a collaborative and stimulating environment where your contributions will drive impactful scientific discoveries. Join us in shaping the future of materials science.

What You Will Do:

  • Coordinate the processing of wafers and materials across divisions and institutions, including industry partners, to produce samples for scientific experiments on EUV lithography and nanoelectronics.
  • Lead the study of integrating novel materials like 2D materials (e.g., TMDs) within CMOS-type architectures and process flows.
  • Design, plan, and execute lithography exposures on the Berkeley micro-exposure tool (MET5).
  • Ensure and promote a safety culture, actively collaborating with Safety Coordinators and Environment, Health & Safety at LBNL.
  • Participate in the development of resonant scattering soft x-ray scattering (RSoXS) techniques to understand radiation chemistry's role in EUV patterning materials.
  • Characterize materials and devices at the nano-scale level using techniques such as electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD, SAXS, RSoXS), and others.
  • Participate in the synthesis of 2D materials (e.g., MoS2/WS2) at the wafer scale using techniques like CVD, ALD, and more.
  • Contribute to studies of innovative quantum structures and devices at sub-10-nm scales to investigate emergent electronic phenomena.
  • Contribute broad knowledge of semiconductors, EUV lithography, patterning materials, and integration of novel materials into CMOS devices.
  • Participate in partnership research, leading to grant writing and funding proposals to secure financial support.
  • Work effectively in teams, communicating ideas and results across diverse audiences, and presenting at external conferences.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, engineering, or materials science
  • Experience (minimum 3 to 4 years) using, designing and developing experimental metrology/characterization systems (using x-rays, electrical probing)
  • 2 years' experience in the synthesis of ultra-thin materials and fixed-point transfer techniques
  • Skilled in nanofabrication techniques such as EUV lithography, e-beam lithography, CVD, CVT, ALD, PECVD, PVD and etching
  • Adept at AFM/STM, SEM/TEM, XRD, Raman characterization techniques
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences
  • Track record of leading and collaborating on multiple projects simultaneously

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with synchrotron-based experimentation
  • Proficient in scientific software (Python, Matlab, R, Design CAD, Hyperlith, Origin )
  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques for effective presentation of research findings
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance standards related to laboratory safety

Notes:

  • This is a full time 5-year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $89,340- $142,944, which fits within the full salary range of $89,340- $214,416 for the S13.1 job code. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
