You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. Qualifications This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Marine Operating Engineer Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Applying knowledge of the safe and proper operation of tug boat engineering systems, including Caterpillar 3500 series main propulsion engines, Schottel azimuth stern drives, 120kw John Deere generators and switchboards, JohRie HPU, winch, and capstan, in addition to other auxiliary equipment onboard tugboats; 2) Directing marine technicians or contractors in performing maintenance and repairs on engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary generators, pumps, compressors, and firefighting equipment; 3) Collaborating and coordinating with shore support personnel regarding scheduled maintenance, yard availabilities and dry docking periods while overseeing the troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and installation of equipment of various marine crafts; and 4) Displaying knowledge of planned maintenance programs similar to the Navy 3M systems for preventative vessel measures. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. Call back overtime is a requirement of this position. Work may be required at any of Regional locations: NBK Bremerton, NBK Bangor, NAVMAG Indian Island, or NAVSTA Everett. Physical Effort: The work requires long periods of standing and walking on the tugboat while underway. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over 3-foot bulkheads on a rocking tugboat, which requires use of legs, hands, and arms. Will be required to lift and move lines weighing up to 44 pounds, Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. Must have sufficient hearing to understand verbal commands over surrounding noise of vessel and ship operations. Must be able to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color.
