Job Summary Accountable for the performance of health care services, applying X-ray energy to assist in diagnosis or treatment of breast disease in humans. Accountable for the performance of medical imaging of the breast, which will allow the radiologist to visualize all the breast adequately to give an optimal interpretation. Exercise professional judgment in the performance of services and maintains good medical ethics. Apply good patient care and recognize patient conditions to successfully complete exam. Responsibilities Obtain all current and past history that will help the Radiologist in the in the interpretation.
• Prepare patient for exam both physically and mentally.
• Successfully manipulate mammography machine to best achieve the desired position allowing as much breast tissue to be visualized.
• Adequately position and compress breast to achieve the best mammogram possible. Explain to the patient the need for and the importance of compression.
• Select appropriate technical factors that will best penetrate all breast tissue, but will not over penetrate.
• Evaluate the images performed for proper technical factors, compression, posi tioning and anatomy.
• Apply principles of Radiation Protection (ex. LMP/Shielding).
• Practice aseptic techniques as necessary.
• Assist the Radiologist in any way necessary in special exams such as needle localizations.
• Perform specimen images when necessary.
• Assume responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
• Possess knowledge of breast self-examination, and answer or assist patients in their questions about their breasts.
• Initiate basic life support action when necessary.
• Assist in maintaining medical records, respecting confidentiality.
• Assume responsibility of assigned area and report any equipment malfunctions to appropriate persons.
• Provide practical instruction for students and other health care professionals.
• Participate in department's Quality Assurance program and properly perform assigned tasks.
• Pursue appropriate continuing Education.
• Maintain knowledge of and observe Universal precautions.
• Understand and apply patient relation skills. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Perform related duties as assigned. Education Associate's Degree (Required) Experience: A minimum of 2 years recent mammography experience. 3 or more years preferred.
