Summary: Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts by performing the following duties: Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications. Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data. Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly. Performs minor machine maintenance. Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated. Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems. Continuous demonstration of a positive attitude. Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Lead by example and motivate others to achieve continuous improvement. Willingly assist with problem solving and react to all needs with a high degree of urgency. Knowledge of operation and basic preventative maintenance of equipment. Act as a liaison between co-workers and all departments. Assist in maintaining schedule to meet customer expectations. Assume departmental lead in the absence of direct supervision. Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may indirectly supervise or coordinate personnel and job functions in order to complete work in the department. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Two-year certificate from an accredited college or technical school; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to accurately measure with a tape measure, precision measuring instruments, and square to 1/10" and convert decimals to fractions. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: Knowledge of CNC programming is preferred. Basic knowledge of computers to log in and navigate to access job folders to view sales quotes if necessary to retrieve paint specifications is desired. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: This job requires no certificates, licenses, or registrations. Other Qualifications: Ability to distinguish stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum and read blueprints and schematics. Must be willing work overtime on an as-needed basis to maintain production deadlines.
