The HSE Group at Lilly Research Laboratories plays a crucial role in safeguarding health, safety, and environmental standards. Specifically focused on LRL Discovery Biology operations, this position provides daily support for industrial hygiene and safety to the biology labs. The primary responsibility lies in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment, with a commitment to pursuing these goals in a proactive and conscientious manner. This role plays a pivotal part in guaranteeing compliance with all relevant laws, statutes, regulations, and corporate HSE standards. This includes oversight of the exposure control program, biological safety, and containment of potent compounds or research materials. Collaboration with the Global Chemical Hygiene Officer and Global Biosafety Officer is integral, as these roles work collaboratively to cover discovery chemistry and research biology comprehensively across the campus. Through this coordinated effort, the associate contributes to the effective implementation of safety protocols and standards, ensuring the well-being of employees and the adherence to regulatory requirements.

Key Objectives and Deliverables:

  • Must have a good understanding of biosafety requirements and work practices / control measures for Biosafety Level 2 lab operations.
  • Serve as a technical resource for HSE related questions and regulatory interpretations for the research biology areas.
  • Leadership and organization of the various LRL HSE Committees at the Lilly Corporate Center.
  • Lead incident investigations, including conducting root cause analysis (when applicable).
  • Provide hazard communication information and safety training for new modalities, biohazardous agents, and potent compounds.
  • Implement quantitative and qualitative industrial hygiene exposure assessment studies and risk assessments, independently or under the direction of LRL industrial hygiene staff.
  • Provide day-to-day support for the animal vivarium and review animal study protocols for chemical and biological hazards and implement additional controls when necessary.
  • Serve as a liaison for LRL HSE with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Engage in management of change requests, such as conducting new chemical reviews and approvals, high potency (PHM+) risk assessments, new capital equipment evaluations, supporting large scale capital projects, etc.
  • Work with the different therapeutic areas to maintain their information and lab profiles / biological registrations within SciShield (EHS electronic lab database / management system).
  • Lead all aspects for HSE programs, actively engage in self-assessments and corporate HSE audits, and complete control measures and program enhancements to address identified gaps.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, safety management, engineering, or other related subject areas.
  • Minimum 3-years work experience in health, safety and environmental with responsibilities owning / running HSE program areas / aspects.

Additional Preferences:

  • Solid understanding of general safety programs; Machine Guarding, Lockout / Tagout, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, etc.
  • Familiarity with laboratory waste streams / profiles and management of various types of waste, solid and liquid wastes, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, recycling programs, etc.
  • Basic understanding of radiation safety and various types of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources in labs.
  • Directly related experience in pharmaceutical or biotech setting, university, or other similar research environments and knowledge of scientific laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of basic HSE regulations and regulatory framework (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) and other laboratory consensus standards.
  • Experience in creating a positive safety culture or helping to improve health, safety, and environmental performance.
