Position Type: Literacy Specialist
Location: MADISON COUNTY SCHOOLS CENTRAL OFFICE

Literacy specialists work extensively with students to address the specific needs of a particular child when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. They work with the teacher using assessment data and observation to design methods of learning that are appropriate for each child. The literacy specialists focus on all five of the main components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

A literacy specialist will need exceptional interpersonal skills, as they will be working with administrators, educators, parents, and students. The role of the literacy specialist is part instructor and part teacher support. These individuals will work with educators to provide research and evidence-based best practices in quality literacy instruction.

Minimum Requirements: Master's Degree (AA) K-12 education (Valid MS Educator License) with a reading endorsement preferred (174). Minimum of 5 years classroom experience. Be familiar with the MTSS process, Structured Literacy, and be proficient in technology and data analysis skills.

Basic responsibilities: This position involves direct instruction; it is not a tutoring position. The literacy specialist prepares interventions designed to meet specific needs of students. Collaborates with the building principal to develop Tier 3 schedules. Manages Madison County Schools required documentation for all Tier 3 students. Monitors student progress based on Madison County Schools policy. Informs parents and teachers of student progress. Collaborates with principals and educators to provide modeling, observations, and professional development on research and evidence-based structured literacy. Attends any district required professional development/professional meetings.
