YUBA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION Classified Job Description LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE DEFINITION Under the supervision of the School Nurse performs a wide variety of nursing duties including but not limited to specialized health care procedures. Under the direction of the teacher in the classroom this person may assist in the instruction and care of disabled students including management of student behavior, record keeping, instructional assistance, medical care, classroom organization and interaction with students, support staff, parents and agencies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs specialized physical health care services in accordance with Education Code Section 49425 under the training and supervision of a qualified School Nurse (may include gastrostomy tube feeding, urinary catheterization, ostomy, tracheotomy and/or respiratory care). Assist supervising school nurse developing student health care procedures and protocol and assessing classroom environments for safety and hygiene. Assess students for acute and chronic health problems as requested by school staff and supervising school nurse. Report student health concerns to school nurse. Contact family/agencies to make appropriate referrals as directed by school nurse. Note health concerns, assessment data and family/agency contacts on appropriate records. Record direct student contact for assessment on Medi-Cal billing logs. Carries out behavior management techniques according to student IEPs and classroom rules; monitors daily behaviors to maintain classroom order; redirects negative behaviors and reinforces appropriate behaviors; implements consequences for inappropriate behavior; and physically restrains student, if necessary, for classroom safety. Perform other duties as requested by supervising school nurse and classroom teacher. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Requires equivalent of the completion of graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurses Training Program. Requires minimum of one year related experience and four years of home health nursing in pediatrics or equivalent experiences desired. Skill and Ability Requires the knowledge of modern medical terminology equipment and techniques including physical assessment skills and acute and chronic health conditions and medications commonly used for these conditions in the pediatric population. Requires interpersonal skills using tack, patience and courtesy. Knowledge of health and safety regulations and the ability to operate specialized medical equipment. Requires the ability to conduct a wide variety of nursing duties and perform specialized health procedures according to established procedures and protocol. Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field. Must be able to work independently prioritize and schedule work. Physical Ability Requires the ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone. See to perform nursing duties. Stand walk and bend over kneel, crouch and reach overhead to grasp, pull and move. Must lift light to medium weight materials or equipment up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, over 50 lbs. on an occasional basis. Potential contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases and chemicals including antiseptics and disinfectant.
