SUMMARY:
Under the direction, supervision, and evaluation of the Health Services Coordinator, Lead Registered Nurse and provides nursing services and prescribed medical services to students within the structure of the student's school program.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES include the following:

Ability to administer medications and treatments to students and knowledge of laws and policies for dispensing and control of medications and treatments.

Ability to recognize situations that exceed LVN training and expertise, thus necessitating the need to notify and consult with the Lead Registered Nurse.

Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction.

Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.

Ability to exercise professionalism when providing care or communicating with students, parents, staff, and the public.

Administers first aid/CPR per American Heart Association/KISD guidelines.

Ability to maintain medical records accurately.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of all student, school and personnel matters.

Assists in filling out accident/incident reports; distributes copies per KISD guidelines, and notifies Health Services or Lead Nurse.

Knows and complies with Texas Education Agency and KISD educator standards of conduct.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Collect, reports, and records subjective and objective data in an accurate and timely manner including
observations about the condition or change of the student and signs and symptoms of deviation from normal health status.

Participate in the development of individual health care plans in consultation with the Lead Registered Nurse and Health Services Coordinator.

Perform health screenings for vision, scoliosis and hearing as needed based on state regulations and the Texas Board of Education policy.

Assist in reviewing and recording immunizations, and health assessments that are required for school
enrollment/attendance.

Administer medications with the written consent of parents/legal guardians, by order of the student's health care provider, and per KISD policy.

Provide care for students as needed following standing orders or individual student medical orders.

Contact physicians or other health agencies as the need dictates.

Work with medically fragile students and perform specialized medical procedures as needed by the student such as catheterization, suctioning, tracheotomy care, and tube feeding.

Document all nursing interventions rendered.

Notifies parents of illness or injury per clinic procedures.

Notifies principal, school nurse, and teacher(s) of any serious illness, new medical condition, or problem.

Report to the Lead Registered Nurse and Health Services Coordinator information about the nursing interventions performed and the student responses to care.

Implement nursing interventions as per medical orders, standing orders, or the direction of the Lead registered nurse and Health Services

Maintains a clean clinic per protocol.

Requests supplies, as needed.

Organizes and stocks supplies upon delivery.

Performs such other tasks as may be assigned by the Health Services, Lead Nurse, or principal.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job has supervisory responsibilities of the clinic aide works closely with students, faculty, and parents at the direction of the LVN, Lead Registered Nurse, and Health Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Graduate of an accredited educational program for licensed vocational nurses.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) certificate
Minimum of 1 year of experience.
Experience with tracheostomies, feeding tubes and catheterization.
Pediatric experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENCES, REGISTRATIONS:
Current State of Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license without restriction.
Current CPR Certification or agreement to obtain within 90 calendar days from the date of employment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have current vision and hearing screening certification within 90 calendar days from the date of employment.
Computer and Electronic Health Record competency required

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, other employees of the organization, and parents.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and carry 15-44 pounds and occasionally lift or carry 45 pounds and over. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee may be required to be exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
