JOB TITLE: LICENSED PRACTIAL NURSE

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction and supervision of the licensed registered nurse, this position recognizes and meets basic patient needs in routine, non-complex nursing situations; assists the registered nurse in the delivery of school health programs; implements care as directed by the registered nurse; assists educational staff in the delivery of instruction; functions as an assistant to the RN in more complex nursing care situations; participates in evaluation of care; monitors student health care plans; and assists with student monitoring and supervision as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCATIONS:
  • Comply with all applicable school district policies and procedures, health services practices, and the scope of practice outlined by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act
  • Assess, deliver and monitor daily student health care, including medication and treatment administration, under the direction of the registered nurse and within the scope of practice of a Licensed Practical Nurse. Administer medication to students in accordance with Board Policy and Oklahoma State Law
  • Provide direct health care to medically fragile or nursing dependent students.
  • Perform skilled nursing procedures such as ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheotomy care, catheterization, diabetes care, etc.
  • Assist in implementing student's health plan as written by the Registered Nurse
  • Monitor students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, transportation, field trips) for the purpose of providing care as defined by student health plans and assessment of student needs.
  • Participate in ongoing communication with the registered nurse regarding student health issues, data collection, and reporting.
  • Assist in the monitoring and attainment of individual student health goals.
  • Teach self-care skills to students and assist in modifying the environment to promote self-care.
  • Assist with maintaining program continuity in daily student routines of learning, eating, grooming, and toileting.
  • Report outcomes of nursing care, including delegated tasks, to the supervising registered nurse and other designated personnel.
  • Maintain current and accurate records pertaining to student medication and treatment administration, immunizations, screening results, and injury reports.
  • Provide basic wound management and basic life support, including the use of the AED
  • Ability to determine initial treatment and intervention based on SAMPLE (Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last oral intake, and Events leading up to present injury/illness).
  • Assist with physically transferring students from wheelchairs, mats, positioning tables, toilets, lifts or other positioning equipment.
  • Be able to assist students with specialized equipment, including, but not limited to: computers, wheelchairs, augmentative communication devices; feeding equipment; and catheterization devices

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform or assist with needed health and vision screenings.
  • Assist in other educational needs within the building and the district, based on need and availability, under the direction of the registered nurse and the building administrator.
  • Support education and training efforts of the District and school buildings for both students and staff.

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Hold a current license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Organizational skills, basic mathematical skills, basic computer skills, and communication skills are an essential part of this job.
  • Clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics of students in grades preschool through age 21, including students with special needs.
  • Extensive knowledge of procedures and processes to document medical information in regards to patient care and treatment.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification; willingness to obtain instructor certification

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Operate a computer to enter data, maintain records and generate reports.
  • Regularly perform heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials such as lifting over 50 pounds on a continuous basis; lifting over 50 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 25 lbs.
  • Will be required to regularly stand; walk; and sit for extended periods
  • May experience constant interruptions and changes to normal routines.
  • The ability to communicate with various groups of people to include: parents; teachers; transportation; administrators; other medical field personnel; and outside agencies.
  • Manage independently all materials, paperwork, and equipment required for completion of medical tasks; ability to lift and transport medical equipment; and ability to document and submit necessary medical information.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  • Adapt to a flexible lunch schedule, based on student needs.
  • Travel between multiple sites in a safe and timely manner.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • 178 day contract
  • 7.5 hours per day
  • Salary Schedules based on years of experieince
