Position Summary Saint John's Abbey invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Licensed Practical Nurse in the Retirement Center. Day shift 7am-3pm, rotating holidays and weekends, This position is responsible for the nursing care of the monk residents and monks needing short term care in a residential setting. Will have knowledge of general rehabilitative and preventative nursing theory, familiarity with the organization, policies and regulations of the Order of Saint Benedict, Saint John's Abbey and the Abbey Retirement Center. Works as a member of a team in meeting the resident's care needs (physical, emotional, social, spiritual, etc.) by assisting in the assessment of the individual's need, developing an individualized care plan, implementing the plan and evaluating the care given. Responsibilities 1. Attend resident care conferences, help assess and update care plans. 2. Set up and give medications, including oral, topical, hypodermic, suppositories, etc. 3. Applies dressings, takes and records vital signs, gives treatments (enemas, skin and foot care, eye treatments, urine tests, oxygen, etc.) as needed. 4. Maintains records reflecting the residents' condition, medications and treatments given. 5. Monitors the nursing assistants in their carrying out of tasks appropriately assigned to them. 6. Maintains order and cleanliness in the work area. 7. Assist in feeding, toileting, bathing and hygiene, and dressing of residents as needed. 8. Assist in making of beds and maintaining order of residents' rooms as needed. 9. Complies with health care directives of dying residents, notifies proper personnel. Assists with care of the body after death and documentation. 10. May include occasional assistance to monks or others needing immediate nursing attention. 11. Performs other duties as required by the director or supervisor. Qualifications Education: Graduate of a practical nursing program which qualifies the graduate for LPN licensure in the state of Minnesota. Current Minnesota LPN licensure. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent written and oral communication skills Basic computer skills Ability to effectively present information on one-to-one and small group situations to customers, residents and other employees of the organization. Physical Abilities: Ability to transfer residents with assistance. Desired Qualifications: 1. Ability to work rotating holidays and weekends. Ability to participate in in-service training or staff meetings, which may be scheduled outside of usually assigned hours of work. 2. Ability to work with a variety of personalities, exercise tact and good judgment in dealing with varying and sometimes stressful situations. 3. Must be punctual, with a good attendance record. 4. Must be mature and emotionally stable using calm and kind tone of voice, remaining calm in difficult or unusual circumstances. 5. Promoted independence, not dependence, with residents offering choices and fostering self-help skills. 6. Must be able to prioritize and organize work effectively and efficiently. 7. Must be flexible and adaptable to changing situations. 8. Must be compassionate and work with tact and ethical awareness. 9. Must work as a team member with other personnel, supervisor and RN. 10. Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
