Position Summary
The LPN II is responsible for assisting in the daily activities of the clinic operation, performing a variety of technical, clinical functions in a medical setting. Primary responsibilities include taking vital signs, putting patients in rooms, specimen collection, administration of vaccines, and assisting the physician with treatments. Responsible for recording information in the EMR. Works under the direction of the Physician and/or Advanced Practice Nurse.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teaches patients and families components of health care related to specific disease entities; ie strep, viral illnesses, asthma and other chronic illnesses. Triages incoming patient and family calls for illnesses or question regarding specific symptoms and consults with the physician. Returns the calls to patient and families within a timely manner. Records triage notes and phone call information in the electronic medical record (EMR). Monitors tests, procedures and referrals entered into the electronic medical record. Follows established standing orders to refill prescriptions, order medications and/or blood levels for symptomatic patients.
  • Follows departmental and unit policies and procedures, identifies and reports policy and procedural deficiencies, recommends changes and evaluates new policies and procedures when they arise. Maintains a good working relationship with the physicians, providers, hospitals, patients, families, outside agencies and fellow staff members, presenting in a positive and professional manner. Works with insurance companies to pre-certify diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
  • Covers for nurses who are absent due to illness or vacation. Assists in training and guidance of new staff. Cleans and stocks patient exam rooms. Orders supplies. Follows closing procedures for the clinic at the end of the day making sure all phone calls, in basket messages and all patients have left the building.
  • Takes and records patient vital signs including blood pressure, height, weight, temperature, pulse and respirations. Identifies irregularities in heartbeat or respiration and alerts provider. Escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares the patient and room for the physician.
  • Schedules tests, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. Makes patient referrals to other physicians or outside services.
  • Assists the physician or APN with therapeutics or diagnostic procedures including, PFT's, pulse oximetry, gentian violet treatments, suture removals and dressing changes. Obtains specimens for diagnostic testing including urine, blood and POCTs. Prepare and administers oral medications and intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections including vaccines and antibiotics. Initiates emergency measures for any adverse reaction and reports patient's condition to provider.
  • Other duties as assigned. Performs duties listed for lower level service as appropriate


  • Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications
    1. Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. Six months of nursing experience in a health care facility (such as a hospital, nursing home, medical clinic, prison, mental health facility, or closely related facilities).


    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in pediatrics is preferred. Office experience is preferred.
