There are currently four (4) vacancies available in the Parks & Community Services Department.

The starting rate of pay for the position will begin at $16.95 per hour.

This position will work on weekends and holidays.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under close supervision of the Lead Parks Maintenance Worker, this position will perform routine grounds maintenance duties; and perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Laborers assist skilled maintenance staff in maintenance projects. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the area of parks maintenance and related tasks as assigned.

ABOUT THE PARKS & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Develop, build and maintain parks, trails and recreational facilities in a safe and aesthetically pleasing manner; maintain recreational open space; provide a wide range of programs for the community including athletic leagues, classes, child care and development, and senior activities; library services and literacy programs; schedule use of facilities; plan, organize and promote community events; and enforce park rules and regulations and promote safe use of park facilities.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform routine grounds maintenance duties.
  2. Clean and service park areas and restrooms.
  3. Prepare athletic fields for recreation programs.
  4. Operate small power tools and equipment.
  5. Pick up litter; empty trash receptacles and BBQ's.
  6. Close and lock restrooms and parking lot gates.
  7. Maintain records.
  8. Perform facility set-up for various recreation activities.
  9. Cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
  10. Provide quality customer service.
OTHER DUTIES
  1. Performs special assignments as assigned.
  2. May perform duties normally performed by a Parks Maintenance Worker in a training capacity.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  1. Principles and practices of maintenance and repair of park grounds.
  2. Chemicals for cleaning restrooms.
  3. Vehicle operations and state and local traffic laws.
Ability to:
  1. Work weekends and holidays.
  2. Operate landscape maintenance equipment.
  3. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in a timely manner.
  4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  5. Work independently with minimal supervision.
  6. Maintain a courteous attitude when dealing with the public.
  7. Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  8. Bend, stoop, climb, and lift 50 pounds.
  9. Provide quality customer service.
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent; prior experience in landscaping or landscape maintenance work is preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. A commercial driver's license is preferred.
