Three years of experience must have been as a laboratory technician. SUBSTITUTIONS: Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience. Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for two years of the general experience. College training will substitute for the required general experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources. An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience. A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for two years of the general experience and two years of the laboratory technician experience. NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: For positions in Human Testing Laboratory: Licensed to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37: and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. LOCATION OF WORK: Clinical laboratories, educational or health care facilities; Statewide. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Laboratory Technician 3 by the presence of direct line supervisory duties. Differs from Laboratory Technician Manager by the absence of responsibility for managing a laboratory and/or program. Examples of Work EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED. Supervises chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other materials related to medicine and/or research. Supervises the isolation, typing, and grouping of bacteria and fungi present in body fluids. Supervises special diet preparations and feeds designated animals. Assists higher level laboratory personnel in teaching, clinical, or research procedures. Directs the collection of laboratory samples and the setting-up of routine laboratory tests. IN AN ANIMAL LABORATORY Oversees and maintains up to date records, animal identification, and treatment cards. Oversees stocking and maintaining of inventory in pharmacy, surgery suite, and laboratories. Performs euthanasia procedures on selected animals. Removes dead animals from cages and disposes of the animal bodies. Observes animals and reports signs of sickness to higher level laboratory personnel and/or Veterinarian.
