What you'll do The Laboratory Technical Specialist (Medical Technologist) performs clinical laboratory procedures, examinations and any other tests or procedures conducted by a clinical laboratory, as defined by Title Five of Article Five of the New York State public health law. A Laboratory Technical Specialist(Medical Technologist) prioritizes tasks without intervention from the manager/supervisor. The Laboratory Technical Specialist provides prompt and accurate laboratory test results and/or prepares products for transfusion in support of patient care, including maintaining equipment and records, and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance, which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, as determined by the department. Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory to independently solve problems and answer questions. May be assigned responsibility to direct, review, and /or verify work of other clinical laboratory personnel and or/students. May be assigned to assist in and/or be delegated supervisory duties. Performs and verifies (reports) laboratory tests and/or prepares products for transfusion on acceptable specimens to obtain accurate data in accordance with established procedures and protocols and in a timely manner Performs result review for the clinical lab tests performed over the past 24 hours as defined by the technical section and shift in accordance with state and federal regulations. Performs quality control (QC) processes and proficiency testing (PT) as assigned Maintains laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents and/or supplies and documentation required in performance of job responsibilities. Follows all institution and department policies and procedures. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Direct, review, train and /or verify work of other clinical laboratory personnel, students, and/or nursing staff as assigned. Any Clinical Laboratory Technologist meeting NYSDOH qualifications of supervisor (part 58 of 10 NYCR, section 1.4) may be required to perform supervisory functions in the absence of the regular supervisor. Participates in yearly reagent inventory control. Adjusts as needed. Perform and evaluate QC, calibration and linearity values. Review and maintain Instrument and equipment maintenance records. Make corrections where necessary. Implement evaluating lots, enter data and make changes in the instrument and LIS. Communicates training plans to staff and assures training documentation is complete for each trainee/student for each area assigned and assures completion of training and competency assessment checklist, or student checklist for supervisory review. Test cost analysis Interacts with subsidiary leaders and staff providing constructive feedback for process improvement Evaluates and presents data in a viewable format that assists with system changes Participates in diagnostic or follow up correlation studies. Recommends monitoring performance changes where necessary. Assists with the implementation of process change Participates in evaluation, selection and contract processing of reagents and new equipment Participate in the annual budget process and variance reporting Actively participates in on-site surveys with NYSDOH, Joint Commission or AABB. Procedures: Become proficient in use of the application used for procedures Update procedural changes as needed Maintain forms associated with procedures Proficiency Testing: Select required proficiency vendor and proficiency testing based on department test menu. Assume responsibility as system administrator for on line proficiency programs. Actively participates in review of proficiency testing results and root cause analysis of deficiencies Blood Bank specific: Perform final review and reporting of antibody identification Become proficient in Blood Bank billing for tests and products Prepare data for quarterly Tissue Committee meetings Prepare data for quarterly Transfusion Committee meetings Prepare quarterly Hgb/CT Ratio letters for provider files Compile data for annual Blood Service Activity Report and submit to NYSDOH Microbiology specific: Review and interpretation of discrepant testing results, susceptibilities Hazardous materials shipping certification Surveillance of NYS reportable results Performs other duties within their scope of practice as assigned What we need from you Education: Qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations, required Experience: Minimum 6 years experience in standard laboratory methodologies, required Minimum 1 year as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist IV, preferred Minimum 2 years as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist III, preferred Licensure/Certifications: NYS SED Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or licensure-eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required Limited permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit. This position is eligible for a sign on bonus up to: USD $10,000.00 Pay Range Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. Pay Range Minimum: USD $37.49/Hr. Pay Range Maximum: USD $56.24/Hr.
