Job DescriptionSummary

The LaboratoryTechnician/Technologist performs accurate and appropriate testingof specimens received in the laboratory, according to establishedlaboratory protocol and procedures. JobDescription

1.Test Performance

a.Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received inthe laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol andprocedures.

b. Evaluates specimens foracceptability for proper testing.

c.Investigates and documents problems with unacceptablespecimens.

d. Organizes workload for maximumefficiency in order to complete tests being performed.

e. Accurately performs tests as ordered onspecimens received.

f. Verifies accuracy ofresults as those belonging to the corresponding specimen beforereporting results.

g. Collects data asrequired by supervisor on unacceptable specimens and specimenswithout orders or with ambiguous orders.

h.Notifies Microbiology supervisor or designee of any preanalytical,analytical, or post analytical variances.

i.Handles specimens according to appropriate storage temperaturerequirements and as per laboratory procedures.

2. Test ResultReporting

a. Reports testresults in a timely manner and according to established laboratoryprotocol and procedures.

b. Reports resultswithin time limits established for test procedures.

c. Documents proper notification process requiredin the reporting of all critical values that the employeeresults

d. In the event of an occurrenceresulting in incorrect results reported on a patient, employeeconsistently follows the established policy on Correcting Resultsincluding the notification and documentation of corrective actionstaken.

e. Notifies the Infectious Diseaseprovider or primary care provider regarding Microbiology alerts ina prompt fashion and documents communcation in the LISsystem.

f. Notifies the Infection ControlNurse or designee regarding Microbiology alerts in a prompt fashionand documents communication in the LIS system.

g. Notifies the Massachusetts State Laboratory Instituteregarding reportable diseases in a prompt fashion and documentscommunication in the LIS system.

3. Follows established procedures for laboratoryquality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriateSupervisor.

a. Performsappropriate quality control for the test procedure.

b. Accurately analyzes and evaluates QC resultsobtained before accepting and reporting patient test results.

c. Record results obtained for quality controltesting as defined in test procedure.

d.Appropriately notifies Supervisor of discrepant QC results.

4. Performs daily, weekly,monthly or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment asappropriate. Performs calibration of equipment asrequired.

a. Performsmaintenance according to the schedule for theinstrument/equipment.

b. Documentsperformance of maintenance procedures for theinstrument/equipment.

c. Performscalibration of equipment according to scheduled intervals orreceipt of reagents.

d. Documentscalibration of equipment.

5. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents andpatient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the Supervisor ifunable to solve the problem.

a. Follows established guidelines for troubleshootingprocedures.

b. Follows establishedguidelines for resolving patient specimen problems.

c. Documents steps taken during thetroubleshooting process.

d. Immediatelynotifies Supervisor when unable to solve problems.

6. Consistently adheres to establishedLaboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions,Chemical Hygiene and Safety procedures. When handling blood and/orbody fluids, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be utilizedin order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. ChemicalHygiene and Safety policies and procedures will be followed whenusing chemicals.

a. WearsLaboratory coat, gloves, goggles and protective devices as requiredwhen handling specimens.

b. Follows safetypolicies for dress.

c. Follows safetypolicies when using chemicals.

d. Reportsany safety hazards to the appropriate Supervisor.

e. Uses protective barrier equipment as required.

f. Disinfects and cleans work benches/areasaccording to established protocol during and at the end of assignedshift.

g. Properly disposes of contaminatedand hazardous waste materials.

h. Knowswhere to find material safety data sheets (MSDS) for items used toperform job.

i. Knows the location andprocedures to follow in the containment of blood, body fluid andchemical spills.

j. Wears gloves whenworking at the bench in the Microbiologyarea.

7.Consistently communicates with Microbiology team to ensure thatdaily work is completed.

a.Assists coworkers when main bench duties are completed.

b. Assists with specimen processing during lunchtime breaks to ensure continuous flow of work.

c. Assists Microbiology Supervisor with special projects whenmain bench duties are completed.

8. Demonstrates competence in assigned work areasaccording to section schedule and skillmix.

a. Consistentlyacknowledges, through documentation, of changes to establishedtesting procedures in all skilled areas.

b.Completes assigned CAP surveys with the expectations of departmentsupervisor that results are determined to score in the acceptableperformance category, in all skilled areas.

c. Completes department generated competencies as requiredwith acceptable results in all skilled areas.

d. Actively participates in continuing education programssponsored by Professional Organizations in one or more of theskilled areas.

e. Rotates through all workstations in the Microbiology including, but not limited to: BenchA-L, Bench M-Z, Blood cultures,PCR and EIA testing, SpecimenProcessing.

9.Maintains work area - cleans bench, restocks supplies, notifiesSupervisor of low stock.

a.Maintains appropriate supplies for work being performed.

b. Assures that supplies are sufficient forongoing testing. Notifies Supervisor when supplies are belowestablished levels.

c. Regularly performsinventory of supplies and notifies appropriate Supervisor ofdepartments need

10.Actively participates with orientation and training of newemployees and students in laboratory procedures andpolicies.

a. Introduces newemployees/students to the members of the department.

b. Engages new employees/students in dailyroutines within the department.

c. Maintainsvisibility in orienting new employees/students.

d. Acts as a resource for new employees/student, acclimatingthem to the organization.

e. Duringorientation period, communicates to Supervisor progress of newemployees and identifies key areas that may be problemprone.

11. Technology - Embraces technological solutions towork processes and practices.

a. Partners with Microbiology Supervisor in discoveringtechnology which will benefit patient results and turnaroundtime.

12. SafetyAwareness - Fosters a Culture of Safety through personalownership and commitment to a safeenvironment.

a.Acknowledgement, adherence and demonstration of a safe environmentas stated in the Laboratory Policies for Chemical Hygiene,Infectious Disease Control and Safety. The employee isknowledgeable of who the responsible Safety Officers are both inthe Laboratory and Hospital.

b. Assists inproviding quality patient care through the evaluation of properpatient specimen labeling in accordance with the LaboratorySpecimen Labeling criteria prior to performance of laboratorytesting.

c. Verifies accuracy of results asthose belonging to the corresponding specimen before reportingresults.

d. Will ensure that all revisedreports for previously reported incorrect (erroneous) results areidentified as revised, corrected or amended according toestablished procedure and will appropriately notifies the patientcare giver.

Minimum Education -Preferred
Associate's Degree in a relevant sciencepreferred.

Minimum Work Experience
Four (4) months' clinical laboratory internshippreferred.

Medical Laboratory Technician(MLT) "OR" Eligible for Medical Laboratory TechnicianCertification
