Covenant HealthCare US:MI:SAGINAW DAY SHIFT FULL TIME BENEFITED Summary: SUMMARY The Histotechnologist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all time consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Keeping our Promise of Caring. This individual has documented training appropriate to perform all functions in the Histology Laboratory to include grossing, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, cover slipping, routine staining, special staining and keeping accurate QA/QC documentation per the laboratory's policies and procedures. Responsibilities: RESPONSIBILITIES Follows the laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing. Grossing of biopsies and other tissue types under the supervision of a pathologist or pathologist's assistant. Prepares histologic slides from human tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist. o Embedding and microtomy, to include preparation of frozen sections o Routine H&E staining, special staining and immunohistochemical staining. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies. Documents all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed to include troubleshooting. Follows the Laboratory established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the established levels of performance. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Correct the problem or immediately notify the General Supervisor or Laboratory Lead Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory established performance specifications. Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices. Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and proper hand washing techniques. Trains new employees and teaches HTL and HT Interns as designated by the Manager Perform other related duties as assigned. Demonstrates a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation, and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable. Demonstrates excellent customer service. Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin. Other information: OTHER INFORMATION EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Bachelors degree in medical laboratory science from an accredited college/university with a specialization in Histotechnology and completion of a certified Histology program. HTL (ASCP) certification Preferred 6 months of clinical laboratory experience KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES Technical knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to the various areas of the clinical lab. LIS applications (i.e. Epic Beaker applications and databases) Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to utilize independent judgment and work autonomously WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards Constant sitting, near vision. Frequent walking, handling, finger dexterity, talking, hearing, midrange vision, depth perception, visual accommodation, color vision. Frequent lifting up to 10 lbs. Occasional standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, twisting, reaching, feeling, far vision, field of vision.
