Position Information

The purpose of this position is to provide laboratory support for the conduct of labs in the Biology Department at the post baccalaureate level and requires several years of experience in a biological laboratory. The incumbent provides the primary prep support for the lower division labs in Organismal Biology, and Evolution and Ecology. Upper division primary assignments include Invertebrate Zoology, Animal Behavior, Evolutionary Ecology of Terrestrial Vertebrates. The incumbent participates in the supervision (does not include hiring or disciplinary action) of the daily activities of the student assistants and Limited Status employees and is responsible for the Prep Room during absences of the Supervisor and SRA II.

There is one position available for this recruitment and is currently being advertised under two separate postings, as a Lab Assistant 2 recruitment and Lab Assistant 3 recruitment . The position will be filled based on qualifications. Applicants are encouraged to review both positions to determine the best match for their skills and experience. The full salary range for the Lab Assistant 3 is $24.77 - $29.49 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

Education

Education Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge's and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. (Required)
  • Undergraduate degree in Biology or related major. (Preferred)
License Requirements
  • Valid California Drivers License (Required)


Experience Requirements
  • Course work in university level General and Organic Chemistry. Competent in the preparation of chemical solutions with accuracy, including the ability to prepare molar, molal, percent-by weight or volume and dilutions. Ability to alter formulas and delivery systems as changes in protocols develop. Training and experience in working with hazardous chemicals, including their disposal. Ability to impart the appropriate information for safe handling of chemicals to TA's and student workers. (Required)
  • Knowledge of general microbiology required for prepping lab including taxonomy, histological stains, sterile technique, appropriate use of culture media and growth conditions. Experience in the techniques involved in the growth of pure bacterial cultures, media preparation, disposal of biohazard materials. (Required)
  • Able to prioritize assignments for student workers and limited status Lab Assistant I. Ability to recognize limitations of the student workers experience and knowledge and provide additional training to the more capable workers. (Required)


Minimum Requirements

Communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty. Requires excellent English language skills, able to write in a clear concise manner. Ability to operate spectrophotometers, pH meters, combination video and microscope units, centrifuges, micropipetters, electronic balances, programmable growth chambers, compound/stereo microscopes, media dispenser, hand tools, autoclaves, computer, printer, scanner, 1 1/2 ton box style truck, LCD projector. Possess capability to recognize equipment operating in a suboptimal manner and refer said equipment for repairs. PC skills including use of Windows and Office 365. Must be able to update and maintain iMacs used in the teaching labs. Ability to adapt set laboratory routines as changes in availability of materials and equipment arise. Must be able to quickly prioritize personal work assignments in the event of absences of other Lab Prep personnel. Ability to follow procedures designated by EH&S regarding the handling, storage and disposal of chemical and biological hazards.



Preferred Qualifications

Has attended the following courses offered through campus Environmental Health and Safety: Fire Extinguisher Training, Hazardous Waste Management for Laboratory Personnel and Laboratory Safety Orientation. Knowledge of interpreting manufacturers chemical hazard labels, correct labeling of hazards in the classroom including solutions or biologicals supplied to students, providing appropriate containers for disposal and the ability to communicate this information to student workers and TA's. Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance. Courses in Introductory Genetics, Molecular Biology, Evolution, Population Genetics, Population and Community Ecology, Cellular Biology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology.
