Summary You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the OSH&E Support Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Office (Code 1084), of the Environmental Protection/OCC Safety & Health Code (108), located at Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF). of TRIREFFAC KINGS BAY. Responsibilities You will keep abreast of regulatory requirements, especially recent changes to those requirements. You will Identify training requirements, which include the preparation of lesson plans and program briefs for personnel involved in the IH Programs. You will prepare instructions, notices, OSH Manual chapters, alerts, letters, memoranda, technical reports, and correspondence regarding IH Programs You will research and resolve command industrial hygiene problems that could have an effect on commands mission or our duty to the safety of the employees. You will make non-routine inspections and surveys of work sites to ensure compliance with occupational health criteria established by OPNAV and NAVSEA. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-11 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience evaluating and eliminating environmental conditions in the workplace. Experience measuring chemical exposures. Experience recognizing and evaluating occupational health hazards, including those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood. Experience developing a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, and change in work procedures. Experience evaluating proposed work processes, materials, and facilities to recommend measures to minimize health hazards. Experience investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience in industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices, applicable to planning and carrying out all industrial hygiene programs. Experience assisting to recognize and evaluate occupational health hazards, including those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood. Experience planning a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, and change in work procedures. Experience assisting to evaluate proposed work processes, materials, and facilities to recommend measures to minimize health hazards. Experience investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards. Examples of Qualifying Experience: Involves the recognition, evaluation, corrective actions, and elimination of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. FOR GS-11 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. FOR GS-09 master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.
