Duties - Troubleshoots HVAC/R systems with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions - Performs essential direct digital (DDC), electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and electromechanical control work incidental to the operation and maintenance of HVAC/R and building control systems - Performs preventive maintenance on electronic control systems to include disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration - Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment - Installs, repairs, and maintains large commercial and industrial ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning (AC), and cooling systems with complex problems and extensive repairs Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship Required Males must be registered for Selective Service, see This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program Disclosure of Political Appointments Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and or holidays. Recall to duty, shift work and emergency overtime may be required. Position contains physical requirements; a pre-employment physical is required. Position requires CFC/NCFC Certification (Universal) as require by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, EPA. Position requires the ability to discern between colors, contrast, and depth. Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees May work with hazardous materials such as asbestos or accumulated waste. Employees will be required to wear protective clothing and gear on these occasions The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate driver's license is required for the position. This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force civilian drug testing program. As a mandatory requirement for employment in this TDP, the incumbent is to (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and (b) if required, submit to urinalysis testing. The selectee must sign a statement acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance IT Security + Certification is a condition of employment. The incumbent must achieve the appropriate IT Security + Certification within one (1) year of assignment to these duties. Failure to receive the proper IT Security + Certification may result in removal from this position. Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an HVAC/R EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the construction and operation of a variety of residential, commercial, large commercial and industrial sized HVAC/R systems and skill in installing, maintaining, dismantling, repairing, and reassembling HVAC/R and Control systems and their associated systems and equipment. 2. Knowledge of the principles and theories of all Refrigeration Cycles, Machine Technologies, Psychometrics, Air Balancing, Hydronic Balancing, The Laws of Thermodynamics, Mechanical, Electrical and Combustion Theory, properties of several refrigerants and Industrial Water Treatment. 3. Knowledge of the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, equipment, and precision measuring and/or test instruments common to trades. 4. Knowledge of Direct Digital Control (DOC), Pneumatic, Electronic and electro/mechanical control system's programming/calibrating, architecture, sensory inputs, controllers and controlled devices. 5. Knowledge of security and safety practices and procedures. 6. Knowledge of technical procedures, regulations, policies, and guides and ability to read and to interpret complex electrical and control system schematics, diagrams, blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications, mechanical drawings, operating manuals, or special facility procedures to be followed during emergencies, equipment failures, or system malfunctions. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent will typically be working on both larger equipment and systems which would need to be maneuvered in and out of specific places to create necessary space for disassembly, test, repair, and reassembly. Position will be frequently using pulleys, hoists, and holders to utilize equipment and test/diagnostic materials. Parts and equipment can weigh more than 50 pounds. There may be times when the incumbent will have to access systems from ladders or platforms to complete assignments in at times hard-to-reach places. This will require stretching, bending, and kneeling in some instances for long periods of time. WORKING CONDITIONS: Mechanics are occasionally required to work outside where they would be subjected to various weather elements, as well as cramped low overhead areas. Protective clothing may be worn to prevent exposure to refrigerants, or any other potentially harmful emergent material. The higher the position grade, the higher chance of being exposed to large amounts of harmful gases and liquids.
