JOB SUMMARY Histology Technicians (HT) are responsible for the preparation of body tissue samples used to identify and diagnose abnormalities that indicate disease. They are responsible for the preservation and handling of tissue material through a variety of techniques. These may include rapid tissue processing and frozen techniques to freeze, cut mount and stain tissue during a surgical procedure. They may assist pathologists with gross description of specimens (tissue or organs) surgically removed for examination. An HT routinely processes tissue in preparation for cutting and staining. HT's imbed, cut, and mount tissue sections on slides. They stain tissue using common histochemical techniques and/or immunohistochemical techniques as appropriate. They maintain identification and documentation of all specimens and slides or blocks prepared. An HT maintains equipment used in the department, performing and documenting all maintenance activities. They prepare, label, and store reagents and supplies in accordance with lab and regulatory guidelines. They may assist in training of students and other staff as needed. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs) Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time. Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs. For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age- specific customer service skills. Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate. WORKING CONDITIONS General environment: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area, with moderate noise levels. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids, or infectious organisms. May be required to change from one task to another of different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. Monday-Friday 05:00am-1:30PM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Vocational / Technical Degree in Accredited Histotechnology Program (Required) EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 0 - 1 year Processing tissue in preparation for cutting and staining. Imbedding, cutting, and mounting tissue sections on slides.
