Job Description UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a
casual (per diem) Histology Assistant to support the In Situ Hybridization Laboratory. The schedule will be variable and flexible after training. We are a specialty laboratory in the Department of Anatomic Pathology. This would be a great opportunity for a life science student who is looking to work 8 to 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities: - Act as a courteous liaison at the main desk between pathologists, clinicians, residents, and others, being attentive to their requests concerning histology services.
- Perform inventory of supplies and reagents and order as necessary.
- Answer telephone, notify appropriate personnel immediately, direct person or calls, and take messages when appropriate.
- Transport and maintain the workflow of the slides throughout the histology process.
- Organize and label all slides, making sure the slides are sent to the proper staff (Triage).
- Perform Quality Assurance of labels and slides for patient ID Integrity.
- File the blocks at the end of the day and maintain the slide filing system.
- Monitor the fax machine.
- Perform daily maintenance of the Histology instruments and equipment as appropriate.
- Comply with all pathology/histology departmental and UPMC policies and procedures.
- Monitor the tube system and dispense work to the appropriate technicians.
- Perform Reagent preparation.
- High school graduate.
- Two years of experience in the medical field preferred.
- Experience with medical terminology and copath preferred.
- Ability to exhibit good judgment and tact in dealing with professional and non-professional staff.
- Ability to work well under pressure with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to prioritize and structure work to ensure efficient turn-around time of workflow.
- Must have strong written and verbal skills.Ability to efficiently multitask while addressing details such as close surgical numbers correctly.
