Description

This position is responsible for the operation and repair of heavy equipment and for the performance of a variety roadway maintenance activities. Work performed under the supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor. This position provides service to the public by maintaining a safe and comfortable transportation system on paved and aggregate roadways in all seasons and in all weather conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain a professional working relationship with staff, County Board, Township and City officials, and citizens of Big Stone County.
  • Manage and repair and maintain all equipment and buildings (main county Shop or outlying satellite shops).
  • Coordinate work with the County lead and/or supervisor, contractors, township officials and the city councils of the towns within Big Stone County.
  • Inspection of asphalt and aggregate roadways, ditches and culverts to determine repair, rebuild and replace scheduling.
  • Inform the Engineer and/or Supervisor of road conditions, road projects, ditch projects and safety issues.
  • Maintain road surfaces and identify and develop planning for road repair, reconstruction and replacement.
  • Operates proper equipment to haul gravel, plow roads and mow ditches.
  • Maintain road surfaces for snow and ice removal. Responsible for salt application as needed. This includes operating motor graders and tandem trucks to maintain safe roadways.
  • Perform right-of-way inspections to identify and develop solutions to hazards found within the right-of-way (noxious weeds, tree removal, drainage issues or other safety issues).
  • Perform emergency work to keep roads safe during weather events.
  • Provide support for the county on other projects per the direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor to help maintain County Parks, bike trails, ditches, fixing drain tile and culverts.
  • Address public complaints or issues regarding roadways and ditches.
  • Responsible for building maintenance that may include mowing, snow removal, painting, plumbing, carpentry and janitorial duties.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance, repair, fabrication of maintenance equipment.
  • Perform asphalt work that includes crack sealing, cold patching and other forms of maintenance to provide a safe roadway for the public.

In addition to the functions described above, this position may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion based upon the needs or requirements of Big Stone County.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED and five years of work experience in related field.
  2. CREDENTIALS/LICENSE: Must obtain and maintain forklift operator certification, and random drug testing. Valid Commercial drivers' license (CDL Class A) is required. Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire.
