Apply today to join our team and help keep Oregon's roads safe. As a highway maintenance specialist, you will maintain, repair and/or reconstruct roadways, highways, freeways and bridges. In this split position, you will work with the Region 1 pavement marking crew in Troutdale from approximately May 1 through October 31 and the government camp maintenance crew from November 1 through April 30. A day in the life: Apply, maintain and/or replace roadway/highway striping and/or legends. Use sand blasting or grinding equipment to remove existing paint, epoxy, thermoplastics, 3-M tapes and Dura Stripe. Read and interpret plans and layouts for projects. Review problem areas and flag for striping operations. Service and repair tools and motorized equipment. Keep roads and facilities clear and safe in winter-do snow removal, deicing and sanding. Work a wide variety of equipment and get your boots on the ground to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders. Set out temporary traffic control signs and devices and flag traffic to protect the traveling public and work crews. Maintain drainage systems, dig and clean ditches, repair culverts, inlets and erosion. Clear debris, build and repair fences, clear brush, mow grass and spray roadside vegetation. Repair guardrails, milepost markers and fences. Perform minor building maintenance including janitorial, landscaping, painting and light carpentry. Exposure to noise, extreme heights, all weather conditions, dangerous equipment, pesticides, fertilizers and hazardous waste materials is expected. Must be able to walk, stand, bend and stoop for extended periods and may need to lift up to 60 pounds. May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on-call and weather-related purposes. Minimum qualifications: One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work OR Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training. Special qualifications: This position requires maximum response times for emergency call-outs: 45 minute response time to the Region 1 Striping at 620 West Historic Columbia River Hwy, Troutdale, OR 97060 during the summer. 45 minute response time to the Government Camp maintenance station at 90300 E Highway 26, Government Camp, OR 97028 during the winter. Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position.
