As a maintenance operator, you will: respond to emergency and severe weather events such as operating equipment for snow and ice removal, setting up work zones and performing traffic control participate as a working team member performing manual labor such as: clearing drainage pipes and ditches, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, etc. complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventative maintenance on diverse equipment operate diverse hand and power tools. Minimum Qualifications ability to follow safety policies, procedures, and programs ability to learn and follow guidelines regarding roadway and roadside related maintenance equipment, materials, and methods experience in operation of equipment such as tractors, loaders, dump trucks, etc. ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs skilled in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools such as weed eaters, chain saws, shovels, and rakes. ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter ability to work in diverse weather conditions and to respond to accidents, and emergency situations during/after normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays Additional Considerations valid CDL and applicable endorsements recent experience performing heavy manual labor experience operating diverse medium/heavy equipment experience performing preventative maintenance and minor equipment repairs Flagger certification and work zone set-up experience. Maintenance Operator Apprentices may be hired from this advertisement (Hiring Range to $37,500 - $40,500). This advertisement may be used to hire part-time/hourly TOII Maintenance Operators (Hiring Range $19.47- $26.13 per hour). VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands. NOTE: TO II level Equipment Operators hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date and cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure guarantee and repayment agreement.
