ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 800,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion. Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings. MISSION: To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care. DEFINITION: Performs semi-skilled work assisting journey or higher-level bricklayers, plasterers, or masonry workers in construction, alteration, and repair work. Cuts and threads pipes and leads and caulks joints. Brazes and solders copper tubing and piping. Replaces washers and assists in repairing valves, thermostats, radiators, and other plumbing fixtures and appliances. Assists in fitting, laying, hanging, connecting, and testing pipe. Erects and removes scaffolding. Operates power-driven pipe machines. Paints pipes and tanks. Locates and removes stoppages in waste lines. Assists in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of steam handling equipment, including such appurtenant equipment as pumps, governors, traps, and valves. Locates leaks and assists in making repairs to steam, air, hydraulic, and other high-pressure lines and connections. Assists in testing and in the chemical treatment of water used in heating and cooling systems. Assists in the installation and maintenance of insulating materials. Assists water service crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of service connections, water mains, meters, hydrants, and water storage and pumping plant equipment. Assists in cleaning water storage tanks, pipes, and pumping plant equipment. Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment as needed. Do excavation work in connection with the alteration, repair, or installation of pipes, tanks, and other equipment, using pneumatic tools to break concrete surfaces when necessary as needed. Install piping for hot and cold water, waste, sewer, vent, leader lines, and compressed air as needed. Install or assemble fixtures and appliances connected to plumbing and drainage systems as needed. Maintains tools and equipment. Cleans work area. Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: OPTION I: One (1) year of experience assisting in pipe fitting work. OPTION II: Completion of 600 hours of instruction in pipe fitting courses in an industrial education curriculum in a high school, college, the armed forces of the United States, or other recognized school . LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. PHYSICAL CLASS IV - ARDUOUS: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: Recognized school is defined as an approved agency including but limited to agencies such as LATTC and Summit College. To qualify for Option II a legible photocopy of required certificate must be attached at the time of filing. EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of an in-person interview which will assess Job Preparation, Knowledge and Skills, Oral Communication and Problem Solving, weighted 100% Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly. The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS. SPECIAL INFORMATION: Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
