Duties You will install, measure, and fit heavy mobile equipment components (e.g. fan belts, hose, oil, air, fuel, coolant filters, pistons, valves, bearings, gears, bearings) for operational performance. You will read and interpret instructions, standards, job orders, drawings, and blueprints to determine the overall inspection needs and quality checkpoints for heavy mobile equipment repair work. You will use hand tools (e.g. screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, files, hacksaws, hammers), when executing maintenance on heavy equipment. You will troubleshoot electrical systems on heavy mobile equipment using gauges and diagnostic equipment to verify repairs are completed. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a US Citizen. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Repairing, maintaining, and overhauling complex systems on a wide assortment of heavy mobile equipment and specialized equipment and systems in accordance with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles; 2) Diagnosing and troubleshooting malfunctions in heavy mobile equipment; 3) Conducting functional and performance tests on completed work assignments. PHYSICAL EFFORT: May work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing up to 40 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Is sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, may work in bad weather. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as hearing protection, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing.
