Role:

Under the general supervision of the Road and Bridge Head Mechanic, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic is primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment and vehicles for the Road & Bridge department. This position Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment issues in conjunction with the Head Mechanic.

Minimum Requirements:

Driving Requirement: Class B CDL (Class A CDL preferred)

Experience: 1-2 years of continuous related experience in a construction field or mechanical field.

Education: High School Diploma with Diesel Mechanic Certification or Auto Service Technology Certification.

May substitute required certification for equivalent years of experience working with and servicing (repairing/maintaining) heavy machinery

Interpersonal Skills: Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essentials elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the PBPN for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment involved in the construction or repair of highways and roads including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving.
  • Knowledge of safety standards in construction and heavy equipment use.
  • Knowledge of computers, diagnostic and electronic equipment, and basic computer software, including applications and programming.
Skills:
  • Repairing: Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Troubleshooting: Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Operations Monitoring: Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Operation and Control: Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Effective Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Time Management: Organizing and using your time effectively while prioritizing departmental needs.
Abilities:
  • Ability to adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle quickly and repeatedly to exact positions.
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle and various heavy equipment.
  • Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain composure, keep emotions in check, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
  • Ability to work on-call during inclement weather.
  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) and at long range.
  • Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for training opportunities.
