Questions before applying? Role: Under the general supervision of the Road and Bridge Head Mechanic, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic is primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment and vehicles for the Road & Bridge department. This position Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment issues in conjunction with the Head Mechanic.
Minimum Requirements: Driving Requirement: Class B CDL (Class A CDL preferred)
Experience: 1-2 years of continuous related experience in a construction field or mechanical field.
Education: High School Diploma with Diesel Mechanic Certification or Auto Service Technology Certification.
May substitute required certification for equivalent years of experience working with and servicing (repairing/maintaining) heavy machinery

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment involved in the construction or repair of highways and roads including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving.
- Knowledge of safety standards in construction and heavy equipment use.
- Knowledge of computers, diagnostic and electronic equipment, and basic computer software, including applications and programming.
Skills:
- Repairing: Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
- Troubleshooting: Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
- Equipment Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Operations Monitoring: Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Operation and Control: Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
- Effective Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Time Management: Organizing and using your time effectively while prioritizing departmental needs.
Abilities:
- Ability to adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle quickly and repeatedly to exact positions.
- Ability to safely operate a vehicle and various heavy equipment.
- Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain composure, keep emotions in check, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
- Ability to work on-call during inclement weather.
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) and at long range.
- Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
- Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem.
- Ability to travel occasionally for training opportunities.
