Job Description

RESPEC an employee-owned professional consulting and services company, specializes in applying engineering principles and innovative technologies to solve our clients' most challenging problems. We are seeking an intern for the Summer of 2024 to join our land development services team in our office located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

This hands-on position will focus on both field work and office work to support our survey and geotechnical disciplines with the opportunity to also support our civil designers. Our survey and geotechnical teams are organized in our land development services market sector. Our survey and geotechnical teams also support our other infrastructure market sectors: facilities, transportation, and utilities. This position will require frequent travel around the state of Alaska for geotechnical and survey field work. Travel in Alaska often requires flying in small aircraft. The primary responsibilities include supporting our surveying and geotechnical engineering staff; our experienced staff will provide mentoring and coaching for this position to allow development of industry knowledge and skills. This position will be exposed to our clients, job sites, and small Alaska communities as well as collaborate with local architects and our RESPEC multi-discipline team on public and private sector projects.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Geotechnical field work (drilling, test pitting, peat probing, etc.)

Survey field work

UAV surveying

Writing geotechnical reports

Drafting/post processing survey data

Civil drafting

Minimum Qualifications:

Ideal skills for this temporary seasonal technician position may:

Solid time management skills and ability to produce accurate, high-quality work in an efficient manner

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Interest in geotechnical engineering to support the design of various civil infrastructure (buildings, airfields, roads, underground water/sewer utilities, site grading, paving, storm drainage)

Good working knowledge of fundamental civil/geotechnical engineering concepts

Good working knowledge of basic surveying principles

Self-motivated and detail-oriented

Strong problem solving and math skills

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Experience with reading, analyzing, and interpreting plan sets

Ability to work quickly and efficiently

Team player who strives to provide quality work

Proficient in using Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel)

Desirable: some proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D

Desirable: some proficiency with unmanned aerial vehicles for photogrammetry

US work authorization is required

Work Schedule: During the summer months; 40 hours/week. Overtime hours may be required.

Compensation: This is a temporary, non-exempt part-time hourly position with overtime eligibility.
