Peer Leaders can and will make significant contributions to the lives of first year students. Peer Leaders play an active role in FYS 101 and must be enthusiastic and have a desire to work with first year students. This position serves as an assistant FYS 101 instructors with the planning and execution of the course. With the instructor's guidance, the Peer Leader will participate in the FYS 101 class. This participation may include facilitating small groups, assisting with group activities, making brief presentations with instructor's supervision, and assisting with class preparation. Peer Leaders serve as a peer mentor for students in the class. Mentoring meetings will be held outside of class time and it is up to the peer leader to coordinate the meeting schedule that is mutually convent for the peer leader and the student. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Completion of FERPA training With the instructor's guidance, participate in the FYS 101 class. This participation may include facilitating small groups, assisting with group activities, making brief presentations with instructor's supervision, and assisting with class preparation. Peer Leaders must attend each FYS 101 class meeting. Schedule and conduct, in person or virtual touch base meetings with students from assigned FYS 101 classes. Keep accurate and current records of students touch base meetings. Provide guidance and referrals to appropriate support services or personal rather than counseling. Provide a positive student role model for students during and outside of class. Assist students in becoming more knowledgeable of academic policies and procedures, support services, university resources, campus organizations, and university activities. Meet with assigned instructor(s) weekly for course planning meetings. Complete class preparation activates prior to attending class and in a timely manner. Attend the pre-semester and during semester training sessions and professional development offered to Peer Leaders from Peer Leader supervisor. Maintain class GroupMe accounts for assigned classes Other Duties and Responsibilities Minimum Requirements Must be a current MSU student Must maintain satisfactory academic progress Must feel comfortable using nominal judgment and possess basic analytical or decision-making skills Must have the ability to understand and to follow written and verbal instructions Demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills Strong organization skills Ability to build working rapport with peers Be able to work with a diverse group of people including students, faculty and staff. Capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality Preferred MSU G.P.A 3.0 or higher by the end of the Spring 2023 semester Additional Desirable Qualifications Physical Requirements Working Conditions This is a fall only position that will be hired for 6 hours per week. The position in the fall could lead to other opportunities/positions throughout the academic year in the Office of Retention and Academic Advising.
