BASIC PURPOSE POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN THREE DIVISIONS: Streets Signs & Markings Stormwater Employees will be assigned to one of three divisions: Streets, Signs & Markings, or Stormwater Maintenance. Streets: Under immediate or general supervision, performs street and sidewalk repair and/or maintenance. Signs & Markings: Under immediate or general supervision, performs installation and maintenance to street signs, thermoplastic markings, raised pavement markers, and parking lot painting. Stormwater: Under immediate or general supervision, performs general maintenance duties in support of the City's Stormwater Operations. We will begin interviewing for these positions in April, with a start date of May 1st. We will begin reviewing applications mid-March. Information contained in this announcement is subject to change without notice. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES STREETS: Assists with the set up and removal of temporary traffic control. Flagging. Picks up litter, weedeats around obstacles, and flags traffic for slope-mowing operations. Assists with the removal and replacement of concrete sidewalk. Assists with roadway repairs to include shoveling and raking of gravel for both hot and cold asphalt. Works on crack sealing crew by prepping cracks for sealant and assisting with mobile traffic control. Under supervision, trims trees and shrubs for right-of-way clearance. Under supervision, pulls noxious weeds from the right-of-way. SIGNS & MARKINGS: Assists with sign fabrication. Trims, washes, straightens, and maintains existing signs near and within traffic. Installs new signs and poles,replacing sign poles that are knocked down. Assists with the setting up and removal of traffic control devices (signs & cones) for work zones. Flagging. Drives work trucks with flashing lights to protect workers within the lane for button replacements. Sets up traffic control for the banner installations across College Street. Hammers off defective buttons and hand replaces them with bituminous tar. Grinds off old thermoplastic, prepares clean layout for new thermoplastic, and uses heavy duty propane torches for installation. Assists with parking lot painting using backpack blowers, wire brushes, and soaping and scraping stencils used for painting arrows, stop bars, words, and numbers. STORMWATER MAINTENANCE: Operates large lawn mowers and tractors over rough and uneven terrain. Utilizes landscape maintenance tools including but not limited to push mower, shovel, rake, and broom. Removal of litter from storm ponds. Assists in the cleaning ofcatch basins by working in support of the Vactor truckoperator. Sets up traffic controls. Flagging. Safely operates City vehicle with a trailer. Documents and tracks daily maintenance. Various other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Street maintenance and/or signs & markings experience preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S): Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Must pass a thorough background investigation. Flagger certification desirable. Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Must have a valid Washington State driver license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier. Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Demonstrated ability to adhere to the workrules and guidelines. Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude. Demonstrated ability to work independently. WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment: Typical assignments are out-of-doors normally requiring work in inclement weather at cold, hot, dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped work sites. The work involves physical labor, physical dexterity, and mechanical aptitude. Duties may require exposure to chemicals, toxic gases, raw sewage, or other environmental hazards. Physical Abilities: Hearing, speaking, or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone. Perform physical labor associated with the essential duties of the position. Work in the field in all weather conditions and over rough terrain. Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to sixty (60) lbs. Some assistance is available to mitigate the heaviest lifting. Bending,kneeling/crouching, reaching, climbing and crawling. Operating equipment; electric, gas, and various hand tools. Grasp and hold and effectively use assigned personal protective equipment and tools for the position. Note: This recruitment may be used to fill other positions of the same job classification.
