Full Time Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm

Provides assistance to all uninsured or underinsured patients with an inability to pay to determine if they qualify for any Federal, State or any internal Stamford Hospital Financial Assistance Programs. This includes assisting patients prior to scheduled services, during hospitalization, and post discharge from Stamford Health. Updates the Hospital Information System (HIS) and other workload flow tools with any new, corrected, or pertinent information in relation to resolution of patient accounts. The counselor must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with the Department of Social Services (DSS), other internal hospital department representatives, patients and/or their advocates.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Federal and State Program requirements to provide financial assistance.

Assists patients with the application process for Federal, State and the Stamford Hospital Financial Assistance programs (FAP).

Ability to communicate and work simultaneously with patients, co-workers and outsourced hospital vendors.

Documents all actions taken on an account in the HIS and other workload flow tools.

Reviews all required forms and documents for appropriate application(s).

Maintains an organized filing system.

Contacts appropriate parties to perform prescribed follow up methodology.

Serves as an advocate for the patient and hospital departments in obtaining and understanding all financial assistance programs.

Ability to assist customers with special needs.

Completes assigned daily workflow and special projects.

Provides timely and accurate information regarding patient data/status to other health system departments, physicians, physician office staffs, and other public agencies while remaining HIPAA compliant.

Determine patient eligibility for Medical Assistance, Emergency Medical Assistance, Community Programs, and Government Programs

Effectively communicates patient liability to patients not eligible for Financial Assistance Programs (FAP) or any other Medical Assistance Programs.

Makes collection attempts when patients are not eligible for Financial Assistance Programs (FAP) or any other Medical Assistance Programs.

Explore all available assistance (Grants, COBRA, etc.) to assist the patient in financial clearance

Work in partnership with Case Management, Billing, Financial Clearance, and other Revenue Cycle areas

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

High School Graduate, some college or business school training, and or two years prior equivalent experience in a business setting is preferred. Computer literacy in a PC environment is required with strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
