JOB DEFINITION Hollister School District is implementing an Extensions program for our students. Our goal is to provide an extended learning opportunity for students and a safe environment for students to build deeper, meaningful relationships with their peers, and the community. The program will provide academic, physical, and/or enriching social-emotional opportunities, where staff will get the benefit of flexible instruction options. Para Educators will be supported by general direction of a Lead Para Educator who will help each site promote, endorse and support their program. Para Educators will collaborate with the Lead Para Educator to provide Extensions Instruction. Staff provides instruction as needed by projected enrollment on pre-announced dates at each site. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Support building excitement for your site's program Work with the Lead Para Educator to provide dates you are available for teaching Provide activities in a classroom, shared or other space as needed (Multi-Purpose Room, lunch tables, etc.). Plan and prepare activities which relate to and/or extend curriculum activities that occur during the regular school day, including literacy, math, science, social studies, physical education, and Upon your arrival, ensure the work and play space is ready for students Communicate with the Lead Para Educator about activities, student attendance, and other information as needed Work with assigned students, monitor and maintain student safety during each session Complete attendance log during each session When session is finished, return classroom to its original state (trash stowed in cans, desks and chairs returned to position, etc ). Assist in meal distribution so that all students have the opportunity to eat lunch or snack Provide information to the Lead Para Educator or District Coordinator as needed to operate the program Communicate positively with parents before, during, and after each session or as needed Before leaving ensure classroom doors are locked Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS 3 or more units of Education coursework or ECE units preferred 1 or more years' experience working with children Any combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. Completion of the 12th grade or the equivalent of a high school education; one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational environment or childcare setting. A year of college with coursework in Psychology, Child Growth and Development, or Education may be substituted for one year of experience working with children. Knowledge of elementary education concepts, child growth and development and child behavior characteristics, instructional materials used at specific grade levels; curriculum content and objectives; application of curriculum and instructional objectives for children; positive student behavior management techniques and strategies; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar, basic arithmetic concepts, simple record keeping, record management, and computer usage Ability to instruct and plan learning activities under the guidance of the Lead Para Educator; perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines, communicate, understand and carry out oral and written directions Ability to create, maintain and foster positive relationships with children Ability to demonstrate receptive attitude towards children Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships Physical Effort/Work Environment: Moderate physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting, and occasional climbing or stooping; use of medium-weight tools and materials; indoor/outdoor work environment.
