The dual emergency medicine (EM) and hospitalist (HM) physician provides comprehensive medical care to patients in both the emergency department and the hospital setting. This role requires experience in emergency medicine as well as inpatient care, allowing for seamless transitions and continuity of care. This is a great opportunity for someone who has practiced both emergency medicine and hospital medicine. For the HM portion it mainly consists of admissions, discharges and rounding on patients.

Responsibilities:

Emergency Medicine:

  • Provide timely and high-quality medical care to patients in the emergency department
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat patients with acute injuries or illnesses in an efficient manner
  • Conduct thorough evaluations, perform physical examinations, and order appropriate diagnostic tests
  • Stabilize critically ill or injured patients and coordinate their transfer, if necessary
  • Interpret diagnostic test results, including laboratory and imaging studies
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, technicians, and specialists, to provide optimal patient care
  • Adhere to established protocols and guidelines in emergency medicine
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all patient encounters
  • Effectively communicate with patients, families, and colleagues, ensuring clear and concise information exchange
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of evidence-based practices
  • Stay updated with advances in emergency medicine through ongoing medical education and professional development

Hospitalist:

  • Manage the medical care of patients admitted to the hospital, coordinating their treatment plans and monitoring their progress
  • Perform comprehensive evaluations, including medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests
  • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans and interventions for hospitalized patients
  • Coordinate and communicate with specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in patient care
  • Review and interpret diagnostic results, adjusting treatment plans as necessary
  • Conduct daily rounds, discussing patient status, concerns, and care plans with the healthcare team
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient encounters and progress in medical records

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school
  • Board certification or eligibility in either emergency medicine, internal medicine or family Medicine
  • Valid state medical license (Kentucky) or the ability to obtain one
  • Experience in both emergency medicine and hospital medicine is preferred but may not be required for all positions
  • Excellent clinical skills, including the ability to make quick and accurate assessments in emergency situations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Adaptability and the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments
  • Availability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
