Job Title: Electrician

Grade Level/Terms of Employment: Grade 113 / 12-month contract (260 days)

Immediate Supervisor: Director, Facility Services

General Description:

The Electrician performs skilled electrical work including installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical controls, wiring, and lighting systems, and inspecting transformers, circuit breakers, and other electrical components. The Electrician troubleshoots electrical issues using appropriate testing devices. This role is critical to ensuring that general and complex electrical maintenance procedures are successfully completed throughout Richmond Public Schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, maintaining required records and files
  • Repairs hot water heaters and electric boilers
  • Installs, wires, repairs, tests, and calibrates commercial and residential kitchen equipment
  • Repairs electrical services and switch panels, and maintains lighting systems, including fluorescent and general lighting fixtures
  • Installs and repairs fire alarms systems
  • Repairs and maintains electric motors
  • Repairs and replaces panel boards, switchgear, and breakers
  • Installs wiring in a building including piping, switches, receptacles, lights, and tests to ensure proper operation of all electrical systems
  • Installs and maintains remote control devices for magnetic motor connects and relays
  • Replaces ballasts
  • Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment
  • Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels
  • Tests electrical circuits using ohmmeters and other testing instruments
  • Uses hand and machine tools to cut, bend, thread, measure, install, and assemble electrical conduits
  • Follows all required safety precautions in the performance of electrical work
  • Prepares and works from blueprints, sketches, and diagrams
  • Shifts working hours/schedule as needed to provide services
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Current electrician's license and a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record required
  • Minimum of four years at journeyman status as an electrician preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices of electrical work, electrical codes, policies, guidelines, and procedures
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautions
  • Ability to interpret and work from instructions, guidelines, regulations, and policies
  • Ability to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and school/department administration and staff
  • Excellent knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the trade required
  • Able to lift and carry 20 lbs. frequently and 50-100 lbs. occasionally for short distances or with the aid of load-bearing equipment
  • Sufficient strength and dexterity are necessary to perform all required tasks of lifting, stooping, bending, and carrying electrical equipment and materials to and from work sites
  • Skilled in the use of tools, equipment, and machinery required in electrical work sites
  • Preferred knowledge in using computer or tablet-type equipment
