Health Records Technician 2 Join the Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) and make a positive impact within our community by becoming a behavioral health advocate and helping shape the future of behavioral health services in Washington State. Be part of Transforming Lives at the Western State Hospital located in Lakewood, WA. In this role, you will respond to requests for protected health information from a wide variety of requestors, and process requests for outside data. You will conduct chart and provider documentation audits, and assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes. You'll ensure accurate, complete patient health records while providing excellent customer service to patients, families, and staff. Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs. Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Some of what you'll do: Provide independent expert-level determinations on responses to all types of medical records requests Respond to requests for protected health information from all types of requesters Review requests for compliance with established legal authorization conditions to ensure the requirements set forth by HIPAA, WACs, and RCWs are met Evaluate guardianship and power of attorney paperwork for legal authority to obtain and release protected health information Verify the validity of subpoenas and court orders received Maintain knowledge and understanding of the release of information regulatory changes and requirements, serving as an expert resource for all levels of hospital staff Respond to staff requests for outside data to be used for continuity of care and forensic evaluation completion Abstract and code diagnoses using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and DSM-5 Assist in devising timely solutions to complex, multi-departmental medical record concerns, providing guidance and support to staff What we are looking for: Knowledge of hospital, state, and federal regulatory standards, policies, and procedures regarding the release of confidential patient information Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding and guidelines Ability to work as a team member and resolve personal conflicts in a calm, non-threatening manner Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with medical and legal professionals, management, peers, patients, and the public Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of a computer, copy machine, scanning equipment, Adobe Pro, Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, etc. Who should apply? Bachelor's Degree in health information management, business administration, or related field; AND Three years of experience in a Health Information Management (medical records) office, office management, healthcare privacy office, compliance office or closely related area; Positions generally require current and ongoing accreditation through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
