Position Description

JOB TITLE: District Nurse

REPORTS TO: Superintendent & Principals

SUPERVISES: District LPN, Med Aides, diabetic aides, and district health needs

WORKS WITH: Students, classroom aides, administrators, other classroom teachers, classified staff, parents, community members

QUALIFICATIONS: Current, valid South Dakota Registered Nurse license. Preferred Qualifications: BSN

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking, and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Demonstrated skills in the use of technology to enhance student learning.

EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of RN licensure program

This is a 180-day position, with 10 extended contract days.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
  1. Alert school administrators to health trends and problems.
  2. Assess ill students. Contact parent/guardian and provide recommendations for further actions.
  3. Assess students for child abuse and neglect and contact Social Services as warranted.
  4. Assist in checking for hearing disorders.
  5. Assist with kindergarten screening.
  6. Complete an inventory for all health care offices.
  7. Complete vision checks of all students in grades K-8. Record results and share with parents. Refer as needed.
  8. Complete yearly budget and order forms
  9. Contact parents of students needing updated immunizations.
  10. Contact parents of students with dietary concerns, act as a liaison between the family/medical provider and district food service program to ensure student dietary requirements are met.
  11. Determine need for immediate, emergency medical assistance and assist emergency health professionals when needed.
  12. Develop and maintain a system of first aid and emergency care.
  13. Develop positive relationships with parent/guardian and students in order to meet school healthcare needs.
  14. Dispense daily medication when necessary to meet student learning needs. This includes checking dosage, contacting parents for refills, and consulting with physician when appropriate.
  15. Establish and maintain a professional relationship with students, parents, school staff and the local medical community, including CDP, IHS, DSS, and Community Health
  16. Informs teachers and relevant staff with verbal and/or written student health and medical concerns.
  17. Maintain accurate electronic records on students with specific health issues and maintains all health records in Infinite Campus.
  18. Maintain communication with parents and medical professionals for students with special healthcare needs, including obtaining health care management protocols and signed consent forms.
  19. Maintain health and immunization records on all students within the district.
  20. Monitor blood pressure and other health concerns of staff.
  21. Monitor blood sugar levels as indicated for students with diabetes and provide care for students with a diabetes management plan.
  22. Monitor immunization requirements for district students.
  23. Monitor Med Aide certification and daily duties
  24. Monitor mileage between buildings for reimbursement at the end of the year.
  25. Monitor students with asthma and ensure emergency medications are available.
  26. Participate in the formulation of policies and standards of the school health program
  27. Participate in Special Services Teams (ex. IEP or 504) as needed.
  28. Perform head checks on students as indicated, monitor head lice concerns, assist families with prevention education and communicate with other agencies as appropriate.
  29. Provide immunization records for transfer students
  30. Provide individualized health counseling including STD, HIV, Pregnancy, etc.
  31. Provide information to teachers, staff, and parents regarding certain illnesses, disorders, or medications.
  32. Provide medical consultation and follow-up with students who may have incurred a head injury during the normal school day.
  33. Provide medical consultation for suspected or confirmed impetigo, scabies, ringworm, head lice, or other contagious medical conditions. Contact with parent and notification of treatment protocol.
  34. Responsible for mandatory immunization programs as required by the State Department of Health.
  35. Supervise, coordinate, and monitor health services for PK-12 grade students.
