Summary / purpose of the position


Job Summary: Director, R&D Finance / Rare Disease Assets & BD Diligence & Integration


To be the Director, R&D Finance for the Rare Disease asset activities, support R&D process standardization, and be a business partner for Rare Disease Assets and Rare Disease TA leaders.

  • Working closely with the Vice President, Finance for R&D and Medical, and other Global R&D Controlling team members, provide project controlling support for Rare Disease assets, and ensure that the controlling of the finances is within the framework of the Company, Group accounting, and global R&D policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Activities also include ensuring appropriate, accurate, and timely financial/Management accounts and reports are prepared for R&D and the global understanding and control of the projects/activities they support.
  • As the primary interface for Rare Disease assets, ensure effective communication on global functional and projects and local site requirements, constraints, and deviations.
  • Conduct financial analyses and assessments to evaluate the financial performance, risks, and opportunities of potential mergers, licensing, and external collaborations, acquisitions, or other financial transactions. The role requires a deep understanding of financial statements, accounting principles, and business operations.
  • Collaborate with upper management to align team goals with overall company objectives.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve team targets and contribute to organizational success.

Main responsibilities / job expectations


Rare Disease Assets:

  • Support budgeting and forecasting for functions and project activities based out of Global R&D Hubs and Other R&D Sites
  • Interpret results for presentation & communication to Asset Leads, VP Finance R&D and Medical, to consolidate key messages and issues for Global R&D senior management for capital expenditures and operating expenditures by nature and by project.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to control costs and senior management and identify opportunities for improving budget allocation and containment.
  • Perform the reporting tasks, identify opportunities for process improvement, and implement solutions.
  • This role will be the direct R&D finance business partner for Asset Leads in Global R&D Hubs, including responsibility for Budgeting / Forecasting and Financial Analysis.
  • He / She is also leading the implementation of financial processes and new global R&D processes/optimizations, including clinical trial accounting, and supporting portfolio and program valuations with the rest of the R&D Finance team. This position will ensure the roll-out of K2 roles and responsibilities (in coordination with shared services), ensuring the business owns the process and not Finance, and ensuring finance governance principles are fully adhered to.
  • This position requires broad financial analysis, a deep understanding of R&D project activities, and standard GO/NO GO decision-making in R&D.

R&D Finance Due Diligence & Finance Integration:

  • Conduct thorough financial analyses of target companies, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and other relevant financial data.
  • Identify and analyze key financial drivers, trends, and anomalies.
  • Assess the financial risks and exposures associated with potential transactions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather relevant information and ensure completeness of financial and business assumptions for the R&D Cost Model
  • Develop and utilize financial models to evaluate various scenarios and potential outcomes.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with legal, operational, and other teams to provide a holistic view of the R&D Cost Model.

Other R&D project activities role:


Support long-term financial planning process of assigned projects by:

  • Partnering with local functions, Project Leaders, and key project stakeholders to consolidate and provide visibility to R&D Finance with management on entire structure costs/investments across all tasks within Rare Disease Assets, by indication, by phase, and over the years.
  • Understand the status and risks of all project activities and quantify investments until the next decision-making step.
  • Challenge and provide realistic estimates, ensure no contingency planning.
  • Presents factual results for presentation & communication to the Senior Director, R&D Finance, VP R&D Finance, and to TA Leaders

Managing Teams:

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire team members to foster a positive, high-performance work culture.
  • Set Clear expectations, provide guidance, and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate open and transparent communication within the team. Serve as a liaison between team members and upper management, ensuring effective flow of information.
  • Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing constructive feedback and addressing performance issues.
  • Manage team resources efficiently, including personnel, budget, and equipment. Optimize resource allocation to maximize productivity and achieve business objectives.
  • Foster collaboration and teamwork within the team and across departments. Work with other managers to ensure seamless integration of activities and shared goals.
  • Support team members' professional growth and development through coaching, training, and mentorship. Encourage a culture of continuous learning and skill enhancement.

Ad-hoc financial projects and activities as assigned.


Knowledge, abilities & experience


Education, Experience & Training Required

Experience and Education (minimums)


  • Bachelor's Degree in a financial-related field
  • +7 years of Financial Analysis / Planning experience in a long-term project environment
  • Experience managing and controlling more extensive clinical portfolios
  • Therapeutic drug valuations
  • Knowledge of the Pharmaceutical Industry is highly preferred
  • International exposure
  • Must be able to work self-initiated and in a team environment and be travel as required.
