POSITION: The Director of Staff Development is to plan, implement, direct and evaluate the educational program of all personnel in the facility based on identified resident needs, staff needs, and County, State and Federal laws and regulations, as applicable. In a facility based nurse aide training and competency evaluation program, the Director of Staff Development is under the general supervision of a registered nurse and reports to and is responsible for the program to the Director of Nursing. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Education: AA Degree or better License: Current, active RN/LVN license DSD Certification, or become certified within 90 days of hire date Current CPR card Work Experience: 1 year of full-time experience as a licensed nurse in providing direct nursing care in a long term care facility, in addition to one year experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in the field of nursing, or 2 years of full time experience as a licensed nurse, at least one year of which must be in the provision of direct resident care in a long-term care facility. Within six (6) months of employment and prior to teaching a certification program, the Director of Staff Development is responsible to obtain a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing and evaluation educational programs in nursing. Language Skills: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information, and to be easily understood through verbal communication in the English language. Mathematical Skills: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, and volume. Communication Skills: Must have exceptional communication and customer service skills, and be empathetic. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, responsible parties, staff and outside resources and agencies. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Maintain an acceptable standard of nursing practice and professional decorum Knowledge of County, State, and Federal laws and regulations, as applicable, governing long term care nursing facilities and training of nurse aides and facility staff Knowledge and implementation of the facility's policies and procedures Direct and conduct the orientation of new employees according to regulations which includes but is not limited to philosophy and objectives of care, resident rights, safety, infection control and the policies and procedures of the facility Coordinate In-service Education programs for all employees together with their respective department heads Identify facility staff needs for education together with the Director of Nursing and Administrator Plan and conduct meaningful in-service education programs according to regulatory requirements for nursing personnel and all facility staff to assure competency in existing and new skills, and as directed by the Administrator In a facility based program, plan, conduct and supervise classroom and clinical activities of nurse aide training and competency program including practical and return demonstration of procedures in accordance with approved program. Prepare and maintain all required records Insure that in-services are scheduled timely and posted in designated areas Maintain current records of orientation and in-service attendance for each employee Maintain department records in a complete and orderly manner Evaluate and plan in-service training program to enhance knowledge and skills learned in the certification program and which also addresses areas where in the facility received deficiencies following the last survey Plan and document content of educational programs Include residents and other resource persons, facility consultants from both within the facility and in the facility in the educational program Plan, conduct and document and/or coordinate all required Fire/Internal Disaster drills and External Mass Casualty Drills Evaluate the direct work performance of nursing staff to ensure quality resident care and provide additional instruction in deficient areas Report to the Administrator and/or Director of Nursing any employee whose work performance does not conform to the facility's policies and procedures including areas which do not involve direct resident care Coordinate the safety program which includes but is not limited to conducting initial and on-going instruction on body mechanics, lifting and moving techniques, use of gait belt and participate in safety committee as directed Provide mandatory instruction program to Administrator, Department Heads and Licensed Nurses on Quality Assurance Program and participate in Quality Reviews Assist with new employee and current employee health examinations and tests as directed Participate in facility committees or conferences as directed by the Administrator Be courteous, considerate and cooperative when communicating with all facility personnel, residents and public Promote and maintain good public relations on behalf of the facility React appropriately to emergencies and disaster situations JOB FUNCTIONS: Demonstrate knowledge of, and respect for, the rights, dignity and individuality of each resident in all interactions Appreciates the importance of maintaining confidentiality of resident and facility information Demonstrate honesty and integrity at all times in the care and use of resident and facility property Ability to read, speak and understand English, follow directions and complete the assigned responsibilities of the department Support facility administration, the facility's philosophy of care, and the policies and procedures of the facility Knowledge of basic educational techniques Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all facility staff members Interest and awareness of changes and advancement in geriatric nursing and regulations Capable of generating enthusiasm, and developing a cooperative relationship with staff members Demonstrate ability to instruct and supervise direct nursing care to improve standards of nursing Maintain a neat, clean, well-groomed, professional appearance Dependability Other duties as assigned by the Administrator and/or Director of Nursing
