Job Summary:

The Director of Information Technology and Services is responsible for all aspects of the Information Technology (IT) Department, which includes IT Help Desk, System Administration, Telecommunications, Networking, Applications and Infrastructure supporting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

The Director provides strategic oversight, prioritization, budgeting, and people management for the IT function, while ensuring consistent end user support, data integrity and security for all digital assets, including the OSF website, intranet, the customer relationship management system (ticketing, fund development, marketing function), and user workstations.

In this capacity, the Director plays a key role in helping the organization reach its revenue and fund-raising goals while maintaining spending to a budget. The Director works closely with OSF functional leaders across the organization to achieve goals using technology resources, and helps translate business needs into technical solutions while also helping business and artistic teams understand technical best practices and limitations. The Director ensures confidentiality and reliability of company data, proprietary information, and intellectual property.

Pay range: $130,000 - $140,000


Organizational Background

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) was founded in 1935 in Ashland, OR, and has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a nationally renowned theatre arts organization that presents a rotating repertory season of up to 10 plays and musicals, including illuminating interpretations of Shakespeare, other enduring classics, and new works. OSF productions have been presented on Broadway, internationally, and at regional, community, and high school theatres across the country. OSF received the 1983 Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre and is one of the largest nonprofit theatres in the nation with three stages, including an outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre.

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Provides IT vision and implementation roadmap through industry research, business knowledge, technical design and high-level implementation of the organization s technical architecture and systems.
  • Manages the overall IT department & personnel, including the development, maintenance and security of the overall technology infrastructure and applications.
  • Actively supports Festival s mission, vision, values, and policies, including a commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access). Attends Inclusion, Equity, Diversity, and Access (IDEA) sexual harassment, and any other anti-bias training and workshops as scheduled by the institution.
  • Models and supports the mission and values of OSF by:
    • Demonstrating inclusive behavior.

    • Recognizing micro-aggressions and interrupting behaviors that hinder OSF s diversity and inclusion efforts.
  • Partners with OSF s department leaders and colleagues to ensure OSF is making the best-informed technology decisions, including the analysis of complex business needs presented by Festival stakeholders and recommends technical solutions and/or improvements in the application of technology
  • Contributes to the Festival s achievement of its revenue and fund-raising goals through close collaboration with Marketing & Communications and Development colleagues on design, creation, maintenance, and update of website (ticket sales portal) and Customer Relations Management (CRM) systems (e.g., Tessitura).
  • Collaborates with Artistic and Production staff to ensure optimal development and use of technology where needed in supporting theatre operations.
  • Manages emergency power systems, network, and connections between buildings. Serves as resource for Facilities and contractors on computer-specific aspects of infrastructure (fiber optics, conduits, door control systems)
  • Ensures the back-up and security of systems. Develops and maintains a business interruption/ disaster recovery plan.
  • Ensures that the skill and performance of the IT staff remains current so that the festival may reach its strategic goals. Responsible for IT staff hiring, termination, promotion, disciplinary actions, performance evaluation, personnel training, and delegation of work assignments. Conducts regular department meetings.
  • Develops and manages the department's budget, optimizing costs and long-term supportability.
  • Exercises responsibility for hardware asset management.
  • Develops and manages IT Department policies and procedures, protecting OSF and ensuring long-term viability.
  • Manages off-hours coverage for mission critical systems to ensure OSF production, website and critical applications continuity.

Supervision Received: Executive Director

Supervision Exercised: Sys Admin, Support Services Coordinator, and Business Application staff (Web, CRM, Season Planning)


Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

Education: bachelor s degree from a four-year college, preferably in computer science or related field


Work Experience: 10+ years in Information Technology, 5+ years of management experience in a complex technology environment with preference of management experience in a performing arts environment. Prior experience at IT Director level is strongly preferred. Additional work experience may be considered in lieu of education requirements.


Machines, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids: Expert knowledge of TCP/IP WANs and LANs, SharePoint, desktop support systems, VoIP, SANs, firewalls, Virtualization, remote access VPNs, VoIP and other popular business applications is necessary. Experience with arts, museum, entertainment and/or arts -specific software packages, such as Tessitura is a plus.


Physical Ability: Must be able to do repetitive hand and wrist work using a computer.


Other Abilities: Requires advanced knowledge of all facets of information technology, including changes to Software Development. Interest in and passion for the performing arts (especially theatre) preferred.

Ability to think strategically and to effectively execute agreed-upon strategies; ability to make oral and written presentations and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of external professionals and in-house staff from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; ability to analyze complex data and to recommend actions based on data; exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to speak and write English; top level administrative, supervisory and staff development skills. Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
