Position Title Director of Food Security and Sustainability Position Classification Staff Employment Type Full-Time Benefits Full Time Benefitted Department Food Security & Sustainability Summary Design, develop, implement, and manage WNMU Food Security and Sustainability (FSS) Program and campus farm. Strive to make the Food Security and Sustainability Program and its associated operations as environmentally sustainable as is reasonably possible. Duties Develop and manage composting program focusing on capturing food waste from the cafeteria, as well as other compostable materials generated on campus including grass clippings, leaves, etc. to produce topsoil for the campus farm. Develop and sustain collaborations with programs and departments on WNMU's campus to directly involve students, faculty, and staff in the hands-on production of food crops on the campus farm, composting operations, and other sustainability initiatives. Work with campus and community partners to define a food security impact and strategic plan. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for all food storage, handling, and distribution efforts. Ensure all food safety regulations, insurance, and permitting are upheld. Ensure that the campus farm provides fresh produce to WNMU's One Stop campus food pantry. Seek to develop and sustain a relationship with the WNMU cafeteria contractor, with the goal of getting WNMU's campus farm produce into the cafeteria. Directly supervise the WNMU FSS Program Coordinator and indirectly supervise additional employees, including gardeners and student workers. Seek funding from external sources for capital expenditures required to establish WNMU's Food Security and Sustainability Program, including grant applications and follow-up reporting. Facilitate the participation of students from local public schools on WNMU's campus farm. Facilitate the development of academic programs that utilize the campus farm, composting operations, and other sustainability initiatives for experiential education. Develop and sustain collaborations with community, state, and other groups in the establishment of the Food Security and Sustainability program through town halls, best practice research and outreach. Works a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the programs. Performs other duties as assigned. Education/Background High School Diploma or equivalent with 5 years of related experience, Associate degree with 4 years of related experience, or Bachelor's degree with 3 years of related experience. Job Knowledge Experience working in community-scale agriculture or in food assistance programs. Demonstrated ability and/ or experience managing programs. Experience with greenhouse and/ or crop management. Must be knowledgeable of university policies and procedures. Strong interpersonal skills coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong time and task management skills. Basic computer literacy (ability to use email, spreadsheets, and word processing) and ability to use cloud-based computing systems. Strong soil science experience. Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations) Normal office environment. Travel within the community and within the country. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Mobility up and down a ladder, stairs, and ability to manipulate event supplies and decor. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances. Other Requirements a. Requires a valid New Mexico driver's license. b. Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 2 months of hire date.
