SCHOOL CITY OF EAST CHICAGO School Year POSITION: Director of Facilities REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools START DATE: Upon Board Approval Job Goal: To maintain all school buildings and facilities and surrounding grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that educational use of all facilities can be optimized. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required): Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or closely related field Preferred Master's Degree; Administrative Certification Minimum of 5 years' administrative experience Demonstrated Management and Leadership Abilities Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of School City Facilities Duties and Responsibilities 1. Uses computer applications such as spreadsheet, word processing, email, calendar and database software in the performance of the job A. Examines school buildings on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance. Establishes and recommends priorities on repair projects B. Assigns and supervises crews of craftspeople for maintenance work such as replacing worn or defective wiring, switches, faucets, plumbing fixtures, and the repairing fencing, asphalt, concrete, and ceiling 2. Inspects work performed by custodial or maintenance employees or private contractors to insure proper cleaning, maintenance, repair and grounds keeping procedures are being followed, checks for safety and health hazards, and makes recommendations for correction and improvements 3. Makes determinations about scope of maintenance and/or repair activities and decides which can be accomplished by in-house maintenance staff and which are to be contracted out 4. Plans, coordinates and conducts periodic inspections of all facilities required by local, state or federal law such as fire inspections, asbestos inspections, insurance safety inspections and annual visual inspections of all school facilities as required by City and State to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards 5. Assists the school district administration in the preparation of bid specifications, review of bids and by making recommendations on bids concerning capital and/or maintenance projects 6. May be required to attend Board of Education meetings and address the Board regarding school facilities maintenance and operations activities A. Develops a system for dealing with emergency repairs problems with efficiency B. Prepares reports in costs of work done, materials used, labor expended C. Orders materials as needed, and makes recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase D. Assigns work orders, checks drawings and plans E. Consults with building principles regarding the establishment of regular preventative maintenance programs F. Recruits, screens, recommends for hiring, and trains all craftspeople, teamsters, maintenance personnel necessary to the operations of the school. G. Advises on the hiring of contractors to perform certain maintenance or repair services H. Coordinates, supervises, and participates in the grounds maintenance and gardening work of the district's schools and related facilities I. Confers with school principals, consultants, architects, and other parties in making plans for landscaping, planning and the maintenance of various school grounds J. Establishes personnel schedules and maintains such personnel records as are needed K. Evaluates staff members L. Performs whatever other duties as may be assigned from time to time Working Conditions and Physical Environment Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to angry students/parents and neighborhoods considered to have high levels of violence potential This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee.
