Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Job Title: Director of Clinical Education Department: Academic Affairs and Student Services Facility: Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan-Virtua SOM) Reports to: Assistant Dean of Clinical Education SUMMARY The Director of Clinical Education will work in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education to navigate clinical site relationships, student educational requirements, staffing needs, and student outreach for the Department of Clinical Education. The Director will work with the necessary clinical departments and divisions of Academic Affairs and student services at Rowan Virtua SOM, our sixteen (16) partner hospitals and affiliated clinical sites to ensure that our students have a robust clinical education in accordance with the Rowan Virtua SOM curriculum. The Director of Clinical Education at Rowan Virtua SOM reports to the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Monitoring Requirements and Quality of Partner Hospital Sites The Rowan Virtua SOM Director of Clinical Education: Interfaces with partner hospitals to ensure our students meet all their onboarding requirements prior to beginning any rotation. Is responsible to ensure that Rowan Virtua SOM's educational and administrative obligations to our partner hospitals are accomplished in accordance with the language in our affiliation agreements. Is responsible for assisting the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education in coordinating, collecting, and documenting all of Rowan Virtua SOM's COCA requirements as they relate to clinical education. Travels at least yearly visits to all affiliate hospital sites to meet with both students and the academic and administrative staff of the hospital system consistent with our accreditor's (COCA) basic requirements. Works with the academic and administrative staff at affiliated hospitals to expand currently existing rotations, and create new rotation opportunities for Rowan Virtua SOM core clerkship and fourth year students. Serves as first contact with hospital systems or clinical offices where new core or elective rotations could be established. Manage Staff in the Department of Clinical Education Transitions Pre-Clerkship Students into Clinical Years/Coordinates shadowing Develops and delivers educational programs for pre-clerkship students to aid in their transition to core and fourth year clinical clerkships Serves as a point of contact for all preclinical students regarding the clinical years of training and shadowing opportunities. Affiliation Agreements Serves as the contact between Rowan University Office of General Counsel and the Academic and Legal Counsel at hospital systems for matters involving clinical affiliation agreements Ensures all affiliation agreements are current and active Reviews all Affiliation Agreements to ensure that Rowan Virtua SOM meets the clinical education requirements documented Ensures Volunteer Faculty Credentialing Works with physicians and the Medical Staff Offices of our 16 partner hospitals and affiliated sites, and the Rowan Virtua SOM Office of Faculty Affairs to ensure proper credentialing of all teaching staff. Develop and Maintain Department Documents and Student Resources The Rowan Virtua SOM Director of Clinical Education, with the oversight of the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education will annually update the following documents: Student handbook regarding all clinical education matters The elective guide for 3rd and 4th year students. The "Rowan Virtua SOM Resident Connect Program" (Specialty mentoring) Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE Masters Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Education, health education field, or a related field (Master's Degree preferred) plus five (5) years of experience in clinical education at an LCME or COCA accredited medical school. Experience with diverse populations, awareness of one's own attitudes, beliefs, biases, and assumptions about others and a record of respect and openness towards people whose social and cultural background is different from one's own is a plus for this position. Candidates should have the ability to recognize and manage one's behaviors and communications to create an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment within the department/organization. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Proven ability to work cooperatively with students and staff.
